Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox

The Jays visit probably the #1 team in the A.L. and amazingly come out with a generally positive result....

Game 1: Toronto faced newly-acquired Rich Monteleone, who had a decent start, but the Jays' lightly-regarded #5 starter Brian Williams rebounded in a big way from his unmitigated disaster in Detroit last week.  Williams tossed his first career complete game and prevailed by the count of 7-2, lowering his ERA from the ionosphere down to the mere stratosphere.

Williams scattered 6 hits (5 singles, 1 triple) and walked just 2.  Catcher Greg Myers erased our 1-0 deficit with a 2-run double in the second, and Robbie Alomar's 5th home run of 1993 keyed a 3-run 6th that provided breathing room.

=========================================================

Game 2: THREE times today the Jays missed a home run by exactly one thin split card -- of course Luckless Joe Carter was victimized twice, exactly like last week's road series.  There was a pitching duel between Pat Hentgen and Wilson Alvarez for a while, and the Jays led only 1-0 after 6 thanks to those surgically precise split cards.

A big 3-run 7th for the Jays was immediately answered by 2 runs for the Sox.  Paul Molitor finally got a decent split for a solo homer in the 8th that made the score 5-2.  Jesse Orosco mowed down all of the Chicago batters he faced, but had reached his pitch limit and was replaced in the 9th by the closer with the awesome card and the brutal luck.  The quick deterioration went exactly as expected -- almost.

Since the game was close (or could be MADE to be close), Ward was in fine form: single, single, walk, single, two of them off his own unhittable card and the last one plated 2 to suddenly reduce our lead to 1.  But Ward somehow found his strength and, better yet, somehow found some *outs* on his mediocre card.  He fanned Thomas and Kreuter on 6 pitches to end the game, thereby registering an incomplete choke.  Final score: 5-4.

=========================================================

Game 3: The Jays tried 3 starting pitchers today before we found one that worked, and by then it was 8 runs too late.  Jim Abbott retired the first batter he faced, and no others (walk, single, single, double, gopher, shower).  Enter Bobby Witt, who succeeded in getting out of the first inning but not the second (double, walk, gopher, who's next?).

That would be Juan Guzman, who tossed 4.2 scoreless innings and Gene Harris added 2.1 more to preserve the 8-0 deficit. That gave the #1 offense in the majors a chance to come back, and they almost did.

Ed Sprague opened the third inning with a home run off CHA starter Orel Hershiser, who needed all the support he got today (6.2 IP, 10 hits, 3 walks, 5 runs).  Later in that frame came the key moment of the game.  The Jays loaded the bases with 2 outs and McReynolds hit a tough x-grounder to slick-fielding Ozzie Smith Offerman (4e40) at SS.  Who of course fielded it perfectly and saved countless runs, and as it turned out probably the ballgame.

Toronto continued to chip away at Hershiser and continued to LOB runners in scoring position but did put 5 on the board.  However the CHA bullpen did its job as Radinsky & Harvey closed it out with 2.2 scoreless innings and the Jays never threatened once Orel left the mound.
