The first Colorado win and a lucky one at that! The Rox are off to a sterling 1-5 start.

The Reds make their first visit to Mile High, and although it took some time for us to discover what all the fuss was about, we found out all right.  The Reds continue to underachieve as usual, and fail to take advantage of our weak early-season schedule....

Game 1: Playing in the easiest hitters' park ever created, of course the Reds would fail to hit (6 hits, 5 of them singles).  Fortunately, Colorado didn't hit either, today.  A sac fly in the 4th gave us a 1-0 lead which was quickly erased, but Kevin Mitchell's pinch-solo homer in the sixth restored the lead (and completed the day's scoring) and made a winner out of Tim Pugh.  Final score: 2-1.

Reds pitchers walked nobody though they only fanned 2; Rockies pitched fanned 10 hapless Cincy batters but also walked 6, none of which scored or had anything to do with it.

========================================================

Game 2: Re-establishing our long-patented pattern of choking up late runs, we turned a rout into a close one but still hung on to win.  Cincy got the bats to arrive at last, banged out 16 hits including 3 home runs, and won by the score of 8-4.

John Smiley, who earned his first victory as a Red, was cruising along until he got gophered in the 8th, but he had a 6-run lead at the time.  Larry Luebbers made the second appearance of his career and finally got his first out (the opposition went 5 for 5 in his debut), five of them in fact, with a couple of doubles thrown in as well but no scoring.

========================================================

Game 3: The Reds allowed Kent Bottenfield to have one of the best starts he's going to make this year, scrupulously avoiding the numerous loaded columns despite the tremendously difficult dice gymnastics involved in doing so.

One Cincy player who had a stellar day was pitcher Kevin Gross.  Not only did Gross take a shutout into the 7th, he went 2 for 2 at the plate (double, homer), drew a walk, scored once and drove in a pair.  Yet all that success was not enough to actually win the game; not when you have the chokingest team on earth on the scene.

Cincy led 4-1 after 7 then allowed a pair of two out (natch) RBI singles in the 8th to cut the lead to a single run.

No matter, 3 runs in the top of the 9th got the lead back to where it was, plus one, and made the score 7-3.

With one out in the eternally-dreaded Bottom Of The Ninth, Scott Service unraveled and tried to give up the cycle (double, single, triple).  He missed the gopher, but the Rockies didn't need it.

Jerry Spradlin relieved and started off with a walk and a wild pitch that plated a run.  Inevitably, with just one out remaining to get for the sweep, the Cincy Chokers completed the disaster by allowing a pinch-double that chased home the 2 losing runs.  Final score: 8-7, as the Reds accomplished yet again what no team in the league does better or more often.  It took 5 in the 9th to lose it, but we were well up to the task.

Alan
