Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox

Neither team (not just the Jays!) could buy a clutch hit for much of the series, a factor which helped Toronto's massively underachieving pitching staff lower its collective ERA from the absolutely ridiculous down to the just plain ridiculous.  Meanwhile the non-overachieving offense ran full speed ahead towards the league lead in hitting into DPs (8 in these 3 games)....

Game 1: Nobody chokes like the Blue Jays, exhibit #1,000,003.  Todd Stottlemyre was recalled from the minors (he couldn't possibly do any worse than the guys with the *good* cards) to make his first start of 1993, and it was an astonishingly effective one: 7 IP, 3 hits, 1 run.  He was in line to get the win all the way until -- prepare for a shock -- there were 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Toronto had a 3-1 lead going into that frame but Jesse Orosco helpfully put the tying runs on base courtesy of 2 free passes.  With just 1 one left to get, Junior Ortiz rolled a 2B 1-3, fb(B) 4-20.  Of course he got the hit.

Fortunately, it would be their last.  Having choked in this manner countless times in the past, the Jays sometimes remember how to recover from it.  Four straight hits in the 11th did the trick today.  Final score: 6-3.

Boston got only 4 hits in 11 innings and the Jays compiled a whopping 20-7 advantage in total bases.  And still came an inch away from losing.

=====================================================

Game 2: Almost exhibit #1,000,004, as the Jays took a 6-0 lead into the late innings.  Final score: 6-3.  Today Boston had the better of the hits (12-9) and total bases (16-12) and LOB (10-7) and they hit into 4 DPs to our mere 2.

John Olerud, who should be the runaway A.L. MVP this year, raised his average over the .400 mark and also displayed a very rare glimpse of power by hitting his second home run, a solo blast in the second which opened the day's scoring.

TOA starter Bobby Witt displayed a very rare glimpse of something resembling control (8.2 IP, 3 walks) but it came at the expense of being hit all over the place (8 singles, 4 doubles).  Paul Kilgus faced 1 batter in the bottom of the 9th -- the tying run, natch -- and earned his second save.

=====================================================

Game 3: Despite hitting into four more rally-killing DPs, the Jays treated Boston starter Chris Haney rudely for 2 innings and then, as usual, became far more gracious and polite.  Toronto scored 7 times in the first 2 innings, and although Haney tacked on 5 scoreless ones afterwards, the Sox never threatened much against Brian Williams, who had his second straight extremely solid road start.

Williams had a shutout until -- prepare for a shock -- there were 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, at which time Eric Anthony gophered up a pair of runs.  Final score: 9-2.

Beloved ex-Toronto arsonist Tom Henke pitched twice in the series for Boston, and maintained his season ERA of 0.00.

Alan
