Subject: Reds @ Padres

The unluckiest team in history continues to make a shambles of its incredibly easy start-of-season schedule, this week losing 2 more games to the weakest team in the majors after being swept at home last week by the second-weakest team in the league....

Game 1: You don't see this every day: two starting pitchers combining to pitch 20.2 IP in one game.  You do see this pretty much every day: the Reds find a way to continue to massively underachieve and choke away yet another win.

Not only did Kevin Gross and the execrable Jason Grimsley both pitch beyond 9 innings, they both took *shutouts* into the 11th.  Cincy had 3 runners erased on the bases in order to ensure that we didn't win in regulation, but finally in the 11th John Kruk came up with a BPHR that gave us a 1-0 lead.

Gross walked the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the frame and then left in favor of highly-regarded #2 pick Todd "Sambito" Jones, who lived up to his new nickname.  He got the next 2 Padres to roll on his card, issuing a free pass on 4 pitches to the first one, and a game-losing gopher to the second.  What else is new?  Reds choke again, 3-1 in 11.

========================================================

Game 2: Cincy starter Tim Pugh pitched reasonably well, a complete game in fact, despite having to deal with the typical Cincinnati misfortunes.  Our first 2 batters reached base in the top of the first, but thanks to the first of our three timely gb(A)'s, nobody scored.

In the bottom of the frame, the leadoff batter bunted and naturally was safe with a single.  The second batter executed the hit & run and naturally was safe with an RBI double.  The dice had not even been rolled yet and the Reds were already losing, and a 2-out clutch hit naturally made the score 2-0.

Barry Larkin tripled and scored on Pugh's sac fly in the 3rd, and Pugh also drove in the tying run with a hit in the 5th by coming up with our third straight single to open that frame.  With still nobody out, even one of our inevitable gb(A)'s would have plated the go ahead run.  So what do we get instead?  Of course -- a gb(B) to nail the run at the plate and THEN another gb(A) to terminate the rally.

A surgical split card single and SB in the SDN 8th was followed by another clutch RBI and, fittingly, the game ended with yet another GIDP by the Reds.  Final score: 3-2.

========================================================

Game 3: Newly-acquired Jeff Brantley made his second start for the Reds and showed significant improvement -- he actually retired a batter this time! -- and lowered his ERA from infinity to something slightly less.  For the second time in less than 3 weeks however, the Cincy offense made comically inept San Diego starter Andy Ashby look like a Cy Young candidate (6 IP, just 4 baserunners and only 1 run), and he left the mound with a 2-1 lead.

Brantley pitched nearly as well as Cy Ashby, going 6 innings with 6 K's and permitting 5 baserunners, 2 of which scored.  Those 2 runs came via gophers, one by notorious slugger Gary Disarcina (who had the series of his life, as did the other gopherer, Chad Curtis).

The Reds tied it up in the 7th when Larkin missed a pathetically easy BPHR and settled for a sac fly, but pinch-hitter Kevin Mitchell came through with Cincy's first clutch hit of the 1993 season to let Larkin off the hook.  That gave us a lead which lasted 1 inning, until Cal Ripken Disarcina doubled home the tying run off of hapless Cincy reliever Larry Luebbers.

The Reds loaded the bases in the 9th and LOBbed 3 as expected, but not before Chris Sabo (our .148-hitting leadoff man) came up with his second RBI in just 3 weeks.  That turned out to be the game winner even though the Padres got the re-tying run into scoring position with 0 outs in the bottom of the 9th (and didn't score?!?).  The Reds avert being swept by the 1962 Mets, winning by the count of 4-3.

Brantley, Luebbers & Sambito-Jones combined on a 5-hitter, 2 of which were not extra-base hits.

Alan
