Padres only win 1 but get good pitching all 3 games!

game 1: This one was determined in the first inning. With a runner on first with 2 outs, Caminiti hit one towards short. In a rarity, Ozzie couldn't get to it (he is a 2 this year after all) and 2 runners were on. Derek Bell stepped up and rolled a hr 1-12 double. Of course he missed the hr, getting a 17. Foolishly, the 3rd base coach sent the runner who was gunned on a 18. In the bottom of the inning, Cards had 2 on and 2 outs when Zeile doubled. Knowing they couldn't get the lead runner, the Padres tried to get the 1-7 Zeile trying to advance. Split card 3 Cards led 2-1 and that would be the final score. Worrell allowed just 1 other hit in his 6 innings but walked 5 (2 on 4-2 rolls).

game 2: How do you manufacture a run when you get a hr 1-18? It is the Padres so of course it was a W hitter. Curtis singled, stole second, moved to 3rd on a sac bunt and scored on a Clark single. Curtis had an rbi single in the 2nd and the Padres were up 2-0. Cards got rbi doubles in the 2nd and 3rd to tie the game. The Cards went ahead in the 5th. WIth out one, they got 1b, 1b, walk, walk before the Padres got out of the inning. Padres managed 2 base runners the rest of the game: one was picked off, the other was a 2 out single in the 9th. Andy Ashby was the tough luck loser for the Padres in this one. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts as he slowly becomes the staff ace (now you know why the Padres are so bad). Of course it helped that 21 of 28 batters rolled on their own card rather than Ashby's (2 of the 7 were 6-12).

game 3: Cardinals struck early in this one. An error and 2 singles by the first 3 batters put them up 1-0. Lefferts, who just resigned with the team, got out of the inning without further damage. And just like the first 2 games, the team that scored first lost the game. Discarcina had a 2 run 2 out double. After Gwynn was walked intentionally, Caminiti hit a 3 run homer. Gaetti homered in the 6th to cut the lead to 3. Padres struck right back with 4 in the 7th. The cards couldn't get the lead runner on Lefferts bunt and that loaded the bases. Curtis then walked to force in 1 run, Gwynn had a 2 run single (missing a 2b 1-17) and Sherman had an rbi single. Lefferts tried for the complete game but, after a leadoff single and homer, was pulled for rookie Trevor Hoffman. Hoffman allowed a 2 out single but completed the 9-4 win.

The Padres pitchers capped a terrific week. They lowered the team era from 5.83 to 4.64 (worst to 13th best...as of now). In 18 games, the Padres have already used 9 different starters. In 23 innings, Ashby has allowed just 26 hits and 5 walks to go with 19 strikeouts and a 4.70 era. Some team is going to get lucky when he returns to his "normal".
