Subject: 1992 world series game 3

After a trip up the west coast and a day off the series resumed in record fashion... actually 2 records.  The Padres banged out 22 hits, besting the old record of 21 set by the 86 Red Sox in game 1 of that series. The Padres also knocked out 10 extra base hits, including a record 9 doubles. Of the 9 Padre starters, 7 hit doubles and McGriff added a home run to the extra base hit parade. Benito Santiago was the only starter not to get an extra base hit, and he was the only starter not to get at least 2 hits.

The game started off innocently enough as both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first. In the 2nd Sheffield led off with a double and McGriff and Caminiti followed with singles to break the ice. After a Curtis bunt moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Burkett dodged a bullet when Dave Martinez rolled his loaded 3 column but got the 1 out in the middle of 8 on base chances (3-4 to 3-11 except for the 3-8 he rolled). Santiago grounded out to end the inning. In the 3rd, Gwynn and Sheffield had back to back 2 out doubles to make it 2-0. Seattle got their first base runner when Lance Parrish walked to lead off the 3rd. Lefferts got 2 ground outs before Lofton came through with an rbi double. Padres went right back to work in the 4th. With one out, Curtis singled, stole second and scored on a Martinez double. Ater an out, Harold  Reynolds doubled in Martinez and scored on a Tony Fernandez single. In the bottom of the inning, Griffey doubled, and scored on a Brian Downing single to make it 4-2. After a quiet 5th inning, the Padres scored a pair in the 6th on back to back double by Reynolds and Fernandez which finally chased Burkett from the game. Charlton came on and got Gwynn to end the inning but ran into his own problems in the 7th. Sheffield started the 7th with a single but was picked off. After McGriff made out #2, Caminit and Curtis hit back to back doubles and Martinez had an rbi single to chase Charlton. Rich Gossage came on to end the 7th. He got the first 2 outs of the 8th before Gwynn and Caminiti had back to back singles (you thought I would say doubles again didn't you?) before McGriff took one over the wall in right field for a 3 run homer. Mike Maddux replaced Lefferts and retired all 6 Mariners he faced as the Padres rolled to an 11-2 win.

Game 4 to come later tonight.
