Ho hum, another series where our opponent gets the vast majority of the breaks as we literally hand them two games, but on the bright side we didn't get swept entirely....

Game 1: Toronto's Bobby Witt had a solid outing where he neither walked everyone in the house nor was battered all over the place, but the should-be-high-flying TOA offense has been grounded lately and today (in fact this entire series) was no exception.  We had battled back to forge a 2-2 tie in this contest, but the O's opened the bottom of the 8th with a single.  The next batter hit an x-grounder to Gold Glove second baseman Robby Alomar.  That's a DP, 2 outs, bases empty.

Nope, that's an error, no outs, 2 on base.  Naturally the next batter immediately comes up with a surgical split card 2-run double.  That's the ballgame; the Jays give another one away and lose by the count of 4-2.  Two Oriole pitchers who entered the game with astronomical ERA's combined to limit the suddenly inert Toronto offense to 5 hits.

Game 2: Things can always get worse and, for the Jays,  they usually do: today we let scrub lefty Joe Magrane come one out away from a shutout while the Baltimore batters were required only to stand at home plate as the wild Toronto pitchers single-handedly took care of ensuring another defeat (7 free passes, 2 wild pitches, 1 passed ball).  We outhit and out-total based the home team, but all that generosity on the mound was too much to overcome.

Final score: 5-2, those 2 token runs coming via a Joe Orsulak triple with 2 outs in the 9th so it wasn't even *that* close most of the way.  Baltimore got 3 in the 4th when we crammed the passed ball and both wild pitches (and of course a walk) into one Keystone Cops inning, then we let them tack on 2 more in the 7th without swinging the bat even once (walk, walk, walk, RBI walk, RBI walk).

Game 3: Facing the opposition's best pitcher, Cy Young winner Juan Guzman rose to the occasion for the first time in 1993 and tossed what would have been a shutout except for an unearned run coughed up by Toronto's massively underachieving defense.  That reduced our early 3-0 lead to 3-1 but the Jays held on for a 4-1 win.

Guzman scattered 4 hits, all singles, and walked 4 but fanned 10 as the Baltimore strategy of simply taking pitches was not quite as effective today at it had been previously.

Alomar missed an easy split card homer to open the game and settled for a triple (and eventually scored!) then Orsulak tripled for the second time in the space of 3 innings and he also scored this time as we built that early lead.  Curt Schilling, like Bobby Witt in the series opener, tossed a complete-game loss.

Alan
