After the aberration of last week, SD completes their perfect week by getting swept in Denver.
game 1: Innings 1 and 11 sum things up for SD perfectly. Curtis gets lead off double, Discarsina pops out trying to bunt. Gwynn singles and Caminiti hits into a double play. No runs. Colorado gets single, walk, single and ground out to score 2 runs. Rockies stretch the lead to 3 with a sac fly in the 5th. In the 7th, miracle of miracles happen. With 2 out and no one on the Padres get 1b, walk, 1b,1b, walk, 1b and hbp to take 4-3 lead. Proving anything a bad pitching staff can do, we can do too, with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 7th, walk, walk, single, walk tie the game. In the 11th, with one on and one out, Derek Bell gets single 1-17.. Of course, no hit but gb(B) for the force. Bell then gets caught stealing to end the inning. In bottom of 11th, single and double start the inning. After a failed squeeze play, Fernandez got a fly ball C for out #2. Charlie Hayes then got a triple 1 (double) for game ending single. That non triple was a sign of things to come.
game 2: Frank Seminara made his first start of the season and was told he was going to be cannon fodder for the game as the Padres bullpen is paper thin (unlike the deep 92 pen). He allowed a 2 out run in the 3rd and then a leadoff triple scored in the 4th. STill 2 runs in 4 innings is not bad for this team. Lets jump to the final score of 17-1. Rockies got 4 triples in this game. Not that they needed help but Derek Bell tossed in 3 errors to help them out. He allowed a 2 base error and a bases loaded 2b+2 base error in the same inning and then added a throwing error later in the game. Rockies scored in each of the last 6 innings. Seminara was a trooper, allowing 19 hits and 8 walks to go with his amazing total of 0 strikeouts. It was so bad, at one point, Rockies pitcher Greg Harris had as many hits as he allowed. 2 of his 3 hits came off his card and the 3rd was an automatic bp single.
game 3: Take a pitching staff that gives up tons of homers to start and put them in Mile High Stadium and what do you get? 4 automatic bp homers as the Rockies win 5-4. The game winner came with 2 outs in the 8th inning. Brad Ausmus had a 2 run bp homer for SD.
