In the battle of expansion teams (ok ones in its 25th season but may be worse than an expansion team) and a battle for the worst record in the NL, the Padres eke out the series win.

game 1: Andy Benes pitched like a rookie on an expansion team. He allowed runs in each of the first 4 innings. Of course his expansion like defense didn't help any. 2 errors by Gutierrez led to unearned runs in the first and 3rd and another run scored in the 3rd on a wild pitch. Down 4-0 after 3, SD mounted a minor comeback in the 4th, aided in part by an error by Florida ss Walt Weiss. A double by pitcher Chris Hammond in the 4th make it a 5-2 game. In the 8th, SD opened with 1b,2b,wp,1b to cut the lead to one but couldn't get the tying run in. In the 9th, pinch hitter George Velasquez homered to start the inning. Bell singled, stole second and scored on an Ausmus single to give the Padres the 6-5 win. Hoffman gave up a lead off double in the 9th but retired the next 3 for the save.

game 2: Padres got on the board in the 2nd when Easley tripled in a run and scored on a single. Weiss tripled and scored in the 3rd to cut the lead in half. Bell got hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a balk and scored on a grounder in the 4th to get the lead back to 2. Weiss' 2 out 2 run single in the bottom of the inning tied it. Stayed that way until the 9th when the Padres again pulled the late heroics. Caminiti led off with a double and Bell followed with a 2 run homer to give SD the 5-3 win. For the 2nd straight day, Storm Davis got the win in relief and Hoffman notched the save.

game 3: With an already thin bullpen made thinner by the fact the Davis and Hoffman had pitched 2 days in a row, you just knew this would be a long game with Andy Ashby taking the hill. Weiss led of the game by being hit by an Ashby pitch but he was thrown out trying to steal. An x play single was followed by a Conine homer for the 2-0 lead. The split of 1 was just an omen of the low splits that would be coming the Marlins way. Teams swapped runs in the 3rd as double plays prevented big innings by both sides. Padres got runs in the 5th and 6th to tie it but left 5 men on total in those 2 innings. The Marlins managed splits of 1,1,2,3,4,4,and 6 while the Padres best split was a 9 the entire game. Padres caught a break when that 2 was a 2 out double in the 10th that didn't even give the runner on first a chance to score. Both teams got a runner in the 11th and Florida had a 12th chance ended with a double play. The 13th saw the Marlins again get a double that didn't score a runner from first. The runner was then thrown out on a grounder on the next play before another grounder ended the inning. Padres got 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the 14th. A grounder held the runners and then Gwynn lifted one to left that was a B?.  Silly manager sending him realizing the split wasn't going to be good. 18 and the 4th dp of the game. In the 15th, Bell singled and stole second and third with one out but couldn't score. Redus doubled with 2 out in the 9th to give the Marlins the 4-3 win.

Sad fact of the week: Padre leftfielder have a fielding percentage of .857 for the season with Derek Bell at .829 (34 po, 0 assists and 7 errors, several are throwing errors). He is 1/10 on x plays.

Sad fact #2: by allowing 9 earned runs in 20 2/3 innings, Padre starters LOWERED their era to 6.05 on the season.

Odd fact: Storm Davis is 4-3 on the season. His other 2 wins came in a 3 game stretch and 2 of his 3 losses were in consecutive games. (the 3rd was just 2 games before his first 2 wins).
