Subject: Blue Jays @ Mariners

Aside from one surgical inning that helped us routinely choke away a 6-0 lead, the Toronto pitching performed the way it's supposed to throughout a series, possibly for the first time all year, and against a tough lineup to boot....

Game 1: Seattle's Randy Johnson has had a poor year so far against the rest of the A.L., so who could be surprised that he'd be in top form against the Blue Jays?  In his 6 starts, four have been pretty weak, the other 2 have been against you-know-who.

Todd Stottlemyre made his second start of 1993, lowered his ERA to 0.60 with 8 shutout innings and so naturally failed to win.  The contest was scoreless into the 11th, with RJ still on the mound for the M's, when Joe Carter delivered a 2-run homer and 3 batters later Devon White greeted Norm Charlton with a 2-run single.

Closer Duane Ward promptly allowed a gopher in the bottom of the frame, but then retired the side to preserve the 4-1 win.  Slumping Robby Alomar went 0 for 6 and took another step toward setting the all-time record for blown x-plays in a season by a 1e15 Gold Glover at second base.

Only once in the first 10 innings did either team even get a runner as far as third base, that being the Jays in the 7th and obviously he was stranded.

==================================================

Game 2: With just a 2-1 lead in the 7th, the Jays broke the game open when, with 2 outs, the Mariners IW'd Paul Molitor to get to Joe Carter.  Carter was apparently offended and walloped a 3-run homer, which excused starter John Burkett in favor of Dennis Eckersley, who looked like he was auditioning for the Toronto or Cincinnati bullpen (gopher, double, gopher, shower).

The 7-run inning made the final score 9-1.  Bobby Witt tossed a complete game, notching just his second win of 1993 and lowering his ERA to 4.43.  Toronto outhit Seattle 17-8, led by a pair of bottom-of-the-order Joes Carter (5 1 3 3, triple, homer) and Orsulak (5 3 4 1 with a homer).

==================================================

Game 3: In a matchup of not-exactly staff aces, the Jays built a 6-0 lead against Dave Fleming, and Brian Williams took a no-hitter into the 4th.  Edgar Martinez opened that frame with a single, which all by itself was apparently was enough to destroy Williams' fragile confidence and waken Dr. HAL.  Two wild pitches led to one run, a surgical split card single and an 99% empty-column walk were followed by a timely 2-out error and then a 2-run clutch single.

Since that didn't erase our lead entirely, Williams gophered up the tying run via a fat pitch to Phil Plantier in the 6th that resulted in 2 runs.

But in the 8th two SEA errors and two hits enabled us to eke out just 1 run before having another gunned at the plate, and Juan Guzman (in relief) earned his 4th win while ace closer Ward racked up his not-exactly league leading 4th save in 5 weeks.  Final score: 7-6, and the Jays completed the sweep despite trying fairly hard not to.

Alan
