Subject: Reds @ Cubs

After a dismal opening game performance (in which we outhit the Cubs despite that dismalness) the Reds get some rare quality pitching for a few innings and rebound from a major choke in the finale....

Game 1: HAL surgically dismembered poor Jeff Brantley (0-3, 7.29 -- he'll still have stats like that when he's our closer starting next year, wait and see) while also surgically focusing on Darryl Kile's 6 column when the Cincy batters were up.  Kile's empty column, of course.

Having dug a 6-1 hole for the reasons mentioned above, the Reds stormed back at the last possible moment: 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, nobody on base.  A pair of singles followed and monster underachiever Chris Sabo provided a 3-run homer which fluffed Paul Assenmacher's ERA up to 8.20.

Frank Castillo arrived and allowed hits to the first 2 batters he faced.  But, sadly, the one thing that distinguished *this* bullpen performance from the kind that is normally provided by the Reds (instead of against them), was the fact that Castillo did eventually record the final out without blowing the entire lead.  With a chance at a game-tying hit, Reggie Sanders ended it with our all-time favorite (and most common) split card: a 20.  Final score: 6-4.

=====================================================

Game 2: John Smiley has been far and away Cincy's most (and only) successful pitcher in 1993 and today he got a rare reward for his effort, which featured only 3 hits allowed in 7 IP, no walks, 8 K's and 0 earned runs.

But the one unearned run we managed to choke up looked like it would be critical, and would relegate Smiley to another no-decision instead of the victory he so richly deserved.

Moments after the Reds finally scratched out a run in the 5th to make the score 1-0, taking a brief timeout from our 10 LOB and 3 GIDP, two consecutive blown x-plays broke up Smiley's PERFECT GAME with 2 outs in the 5th (14 in a row retired) and Chicago's first legitimate hit of course immediately followed in the clutch and the game was tied.

But the bullpen duo of Assenmacher & Castillo saved the Reds today in the 8th: with one run already in, pinch hitter Hal Morris (who would be a starter except for Cincy's grossly misallocated resources) came up with a Grand Slam and two batters later Felix Jose homered, in both cases the first of the season for the batter in question.

And so a tight 1-1 game became a deceptively-lopsided 8-1 final.  Smiley & Spradlin combined on a 4-hitter with 0 walks, and the offense -- at last -- came up with 26 total bases and even plated some runs in the process.

=====================================================

Game 3: Noting Smiley's performance, Luckless Jose Rijo took a PERFECT GAME of his own into the 5th and a 4-0 lead into the 6th (homering and driving in 2 runs himself) apparently on his way to a career day.

A surgical split-card gopher ruined that and made the score 4-2 and, leading 5-2 in the 8th, Rijo hit the wall hard as yet another fortuitous split card from the Cubs resulted in a 2-out (natch) 2-run triple and that was followed by (natch again) an immediate game-tying single by the first batter to face rookie arsonist Todd Jones, who recorded blown save #3 in just 5 weeks.

As in game 2, we out-LOBbed the Cubs by a large factor despite hitting into several timely DPs, and the 9th inning wasn't much different (3 baserunners, only 1 scored, another GIDP was recorded) but that one runner who somehow sneaked home made all the difference.  Final score: 6-5.  Jones vultured the win from Luckless J.R., but the massively underachieving Reds will take any win we can get, vultured or otherwise.
