When your opponent scores its first run on a HR 1, Double 2-20 split card pull of "1," you have to wonder what luck you'll have in the series. But, the Fish fought back to actually win a road series.
G1 As mentioned in the teaser, Tony Gwynn broke a scoreless tie in the 3rd inning with a 2-out, solo HR to give SD a 1-0 lead. The Padres played add on by scoring single runs in the 4th and 6th on an RBI double by Ricky Gutierrez and an RBI single by Kevin Higgins. Meanwhile, Doug Brocail (7 5 1 1 1 7) kept the game 3-0 until the 8th inning when a double and his first walk precipitated a pitching change. Reliever Pat Gomez induced PH Orestes Destrade tohit into a DP which almost killed the rally. However, the Marlins stayed resilient as Chuck Carr walked in front of a Gary Redus PH single which loaded the bases. Jeff Conine then worked a walk to make the score, 3-1. At that point Steve Frey was summoned and he survived a Gary Sheffield lineout to end the inning. Frey also pitched a 1-2-3 9th to complete the save. Gwynn, Derek Bell, and Gutierrez each had 2 hits to lead the winning Padres while veteran Greg Briley went 2-for-3 to lead Florida. SD outhit the Marlins, 11-6.
Final Score: San Diego 4, Florida 1 WP- Brocail 2-0, LP- Hough 0-4, SV- Frey (2) HR- Gwynn (4)
G2 was another contest in which Florida got off to a slow start. This time the Padres had a 2-1 lead after 7 innings. In the 8th, the Marlins broke through against San Diego's bullpen. Tim Wallach doubled and then beat the throw to 3B when Gary Redus grounded to shortstop. After a Redus steal, Chuck Carr singled home both players, stole 2B himself and came in to score on Randy Ready's RBI single. With a 4-2 lead, later in the inning Jeff Conine added a 2-out RBI single. Florida kept things going with 2 more runs on Redus' HR in the 9th. With a 7-2 lead, I was hoping spot starter Jim Converse (8 2/3 13 6 6 2 3) could finish things off. However,Diego again out-hit, Florida. This time it was 15-9, but the Marlins were better able to bunch their hits the last 2 innings. The Marlins' Chuck Carr's 3-for-4 game lifted his average to .330 in this early part of the season. SD shortstop Gary Disarcina went 3-for-5 to lead his team.
Final Score: Florida 7, San Diego 6 WP- Converse 1-0, LP- Maurer 1-1, SV- Worrell (3) HR- Redus (1), P.Clark (1)
G3 For two teams with poor pitching, this series featured pretty darn good starting pitching. In the finale, it was an actual pitching duel. Florida's Ryan Bowen (6 4 1 1 1 5) kept his club in the game, and the Padres Andy Benes (7 2 1 1 6 6) matched him pitch-for-pitch despite the high walk total. This time the 9th inning was the key frame for Florida. With future HOF'er Trevor Hoffman on the hill for his 2nd inning, Orestes Destrade led off by being plunked by a pitch and that was followed by Darrell Whitmore's game-winning 2-run homer. This time Worrell used a double play grounder by Dave Gallagher to record an unconventional 1-2-3 ninth inning. For the 3rd straight game San Diego out-hit Florida, 7-6. Gary Sheffield led Florida with 2 hits while Disarcina and Gwynn had 2 hits apiece for the Padres.
