Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins

A combination of generally strong Minnesota pitching, massive defensive underachievement by Toronto's should-be-top-rated defense and an unhealthy dose of typically atrocious split cards cost us one game and almost the series.  The Jays complete a mediocre 3-3 week by eking out a 2-1 series win over the Twins....

Game 1: Starters Sid Fernandez and Juan Guzman were both brilliant, combining for 15 IP, 6 hits and no earned runs.  Guzman tossed a complete game, allowing just 3 singles and 0 earned runs.  So of course HAL saw to it that such a performance not only failed to result in a win, it became Guzman's first defeat of 1993.

The practically inert Toronto offense (but no moreso than Minny's) had just 3 hits -- and hit into 3 timely rally-killing DPs.  How very symmetric.

The only runs of the day came in the bottom of the 7th when a critical TOA error prolonged the inning and mighty #9 hitter Pat Meares came through with a clutch 2-out, 2-run single that cost the Jays another undeserved defeat.  Final score: 2-0.  MNA's batting practice bullpen was near-perfect, allowing only 1 walk in 2 innings, and quickly erasing that runner with one of our numerous GIDPs.

==========================================================================

Game 2: Second-round pick Jim Abbott's season of luckless misery continued today -- though he pitched far better than usual and the offense put up some decent numbers, outhitting the Twins 16-11 and winning 22-13 in terms of total bases.  But 2 of our doubles resulted in high-percentage runners being gunned at the plate, and yet another critical blown-x (by a '1e3' lead glove in center field) proved extremely costly.

The Jays built a 3-0 lead despite stranding a runner at 3B in each of the first FOUR frames, and the lead held up until that timely TOA error in the 7th was immediately followed by an RBI single from Pedro Munoz which cut the lead to 2 runs.

And then the lead was no runs, when Abbott missed the plate with 8 consecutive pitches to open the MNA 8th and Unhittable Duane Ward came in and stunk up the joint in a big way (2 IP, 6 baserunners, 2 runs -- both charged to Abbott).  Having loaded the bases for the Twins and let 2 runs in without retiring even one batter, Ward did finally get tough after the lead was forfeit and nailed down 3 outs in a row without further damage.

But that one unearned run and subsequent closer meltdown gave Abbott a no-decision instead of a win, and sent the game to extras where back-to-back doubles in the Toronto 11th plated a couple of runs before we LOBbed the bases loaded, and Paul Kilgus notched his second win of the year.  Final score: 5-3 in 11.

==========================================================================

Game 3: HAL really stuck it to the Toronto D again today and Todd Stottlemyre pitched worse than he had all year, but incongruously emerged with his first win after having nothing to show for his two prior outstanding performances.

The Blue Jay offense finally showed up against MNA starter Kevin Tapani and (to a much lesser extent) BP reliever Eddie Guardado, racking up 14 hits and 27 total bases.  The DP combo of Jose Vizcaino and Robbie "1e15 Who Fields Like 4e41" Alomar might resemble Dick Stuart with the glove (3 combined errors today) but at least they hit a little like him too for one day, going 6 for 9 with a 3B, 2 HR, 4 runs and 5 RBI.

Final score: 9-4, 9-2 in terms of earned runs, as Stottlemyre went the distance.  He scattered 8 hits (7 singles, 1 double) and walked nobody.  The Jays hit into no DPs today and had only 2 high-percentage runners gunned down on the bases.
