Subject: Reds @ Marlins

The Reds make our first visit to Florida, recover from a typical choke in the opener and then win a pair of blowouts.  Though picking on a first-year expansion team doesn't prove much, this series does illustrate the fact that if the Reds had gotten anything resembling our fair share of breaks in the first five weeks (or even one in any 1993 home game), we'd have been a serious contender in the West....

Game 1: It should have been "bombs away" against ex-Cincy starter Jack Armstrong, but he pitched a shutout for 5 innings while Cincy starter Tim Pugh had only permitted one run.  The Reds struck in the 6th with 4 straight hits that plated 3 runs, but Pugh tired in the FLN 8th and reliever Larry Luebbers quickly choked up the tying hit, a 2-run single by Gary Sheffield.

Only Al Leiter's wildness (1 IP, no hits, 5 walks, 2 with the bases loaded in the 9th) separated the Reds from another successful choke, and non-reliever Kevin Gross retired the Marlins in order in the bottom of the frame to earn his first (and probably last) save.  Final score: 5-3.

========================================================

Game 2: Another ex-Red took the mound for Florida, and Chris Hammond's own error plus a botched fielders choice allowed the Reds to put 3 quick runs on the board, and Luckless Jose Rijo took it from there.  He allowed just 1 run in 9 innings and this pitcher who should be a favorite for the Cy Young Award lowered his ERA all the way to a mediocre 4.21 via that quality outing, while nudging his won-loss record just barely above .500.  Final score: 8-1.

The top 2 batters in the CIN lineup went 0 for 10; the rest were 14 for 32 including 2 hits and an RBI from Rijo, who is now hitting .304 and has a far better shot at the batting championship than he does at Cy Young.

John Kruk continues to put up MVP numbers in a futile cause, homering twice today and he'd add another in the finale.

========================================================

Game 3: Charlie Hough's knuckler apparently wasn't and the Reds hit the ball solidly against him and the two relievers who followed, banging out 22 hits and 36 total bases on the way to an 18-4 win.  Up 7-1 after 3 innings, Cincy scored 7 times in the 4th off of Bobby Thigpen, all 7 being unearned thanks to 2 Marlins errors.  The teams played on even terms after that, as the Reds shut down the attack and starter John Smiley lost interest in the 9th, turning a very good start into a barely adequate one (10 hits, 4 runs, 10 K's).

Scrap-heap infielder Casey Candaele keyed the Cincinnati attack by going 5 for 6 with 2 doubles & 4 runs scored.  Felix Jose put up a 5 4 4 4 line with 2 doubles and a homer, and Kruk went 3 for 5 and scored thrice.  Even non-hitter Smiley got into the act, singling twice and scoring twice.
