The Marlins play their best baseball of the season as they leave Riverfront with their first sweep of Florida's franchise history. G1 The opener was the one close game in this series in terms of the final score, but all 3 games were close midway through. Spot starter John Cummings and Reds' workhorse Tim Belcher hooked up in a game where neither had much deception. Nonetheless, when Joe Oliver homered as part of a 2-run rally, Belcher turned over a 6-3 lead to his bullpen after 6 innings. The Marlins immediately went to work on Reds' workhorse, Scott Service. Darryl Whitmore tripled on Service's card, Chuck Carr singled him home, and Randy Ready
hit his 1st home run of the series to tie the game, 6-6. With Service still on the mound in the 8th, Lance Parrish singled (and was pr for), Orestes Destrade was hit by a pitch. The third hitter of the inning, Alex Arias, hit a high chopper to John Kruk. Arias beat Service to the bag and the throw eluded Service, and that allowed pinch-runner Chris Hammond to score the winning run. The Reds were retired in order in the 8th, but with (nominal) stopper Todd Worrell on in the 9th, the Reds got a 2-out double and a subsequent steal of third base by Felix Jose before Kruk popped out to end the game. Cincinnati out-hit Florida,
14-10 and out-LOBbed the Fish, 9-7. Jeff Conine and Bret Boone led their respective teams with 3 hits apiece. Final Score: Florida 7, Cincinnati 6 WP- Lewis 4-1, LP- Service 0-2, SV- Worrell (5) HR- Boone (4), Oliver (4), Ready (1) G2 When starting pitcher Kevin Gross singled home Eddie Taubensee in the 6th, the Reds had tied the score, 2-2. For the 2nd straight game, the Marlins had a crucial rally in the 7th. The first 6 batters went, walk, single, out, walk, single, out, and the 2nd single (by Carr) put Florida up, 3-2. With 2 outs, Arias hit a 2-run single. That was followed by RBI singles by Ready and Jeff Conine. Florida now led, 7-2. The Reds came back with 2 in the 8th, but that was not nearly enough to threaten. This time, Cincinnati out-hit Florida, 11-8, and out LOB'bed the Marlins, 11-3. Kruk's 3 hits led both teams. Final Score: Florida 8, Cincinnati 4 WP- Bowen 2-3, LP- K.Gross 3-3 HR- Parrish (1), Arias (1) G3 was the third straight game to be tied in the middle innings.
In the finale, Florida's big inning came one frame earlier as the Fish teed off against Jose Rijo in the 6th. Bret Barberie and Ready walked after 1 out. Orestes Destrade singled home Barberie, and then Jeff Conine lifted a 3-run homer to put Florida up by 4 runs. After 1 more out, pinch-hitter Darryl Whitmore's 3rd homer closed out the frame. Cincinnati threatened in the 8th when Andre Dawson drew a bases-loaded walk and the first of two errors by Destrade allowed a 2nd run to score. But with only 1 out, Bret Boone struck out and Barry Larkin grounded out to end the threat. Despite another error by Destrade in the 9th, Cincinnati could not score. This last game featured 8 hits by both teams, but the LOB were still a mismatch as the Reds had 9 to Florida's 3. Final Score: Florida 6, Cincinnati 3 WP- Armstrong 2-3, LP- Rijo 4-4, SV- Worrell (6) HR- Kruk (8), Conine (4), Whitmore (3) |
