Lets get the sad facts of the week out of way early
In their first 38 games (including the first 2 at home against oakland) the Red Sox made 17 errors. In their next 3 games, they made 12.
Boston stole 2 bases in game 2, giving them 5 for the season. They've "only" been caught 9 times.
game 1: Following up on their 5 error performance against Oakland, the Sox "improve" and only make 3 errors. Of course, each error led to an unearned run and KC won 4-0. After eking out an infield single (18 on 1-18 chance) and another single to start the game, Boston hit into one of their numerously well timed dp's to kill a rally. Meanwhile KC got a 2 base error, wild pitch and x play double to score in the first. The Sox topped themselves in the 7th. After a pair of lead off walks, Ortiz lined into a triple play to kill that rally. Lost in the great defense was the fact that Chris Haney finally pitched a decent game, allowing just 1 earned run in 7 innings to lower his era to 7.32
game 2: 4 errors in this one led to just 1 unearned run (mainly to the fact that there was a 1b+error). Boston out hit KC 10-8 (3-1 advantage in doubles), drew more walks and still lost 5-3. 2 splits of 20 and 2 of 19 snuffed out any hopes for Boston. The last 19 (on a bp 1-17 single) was followed by a double. Guzman got his first win of the season for KC in this one.
game 3: John Dopson faced the minimum through 4 and allowed just 1 run in 8.1 innings. Unfortunately, Boston could manage just 1 run as well. Their first 5 splits were 19,4,18,20,18 to keep their season average around 16 (or so it seems). KC's run was manufactured by a 3b 1 split by speedster Pete Incaviglia to lead off the 7th. After 2 outs, a walk, bp single (split of 5) and walk brought him home and loaded the bases before Dopson got out of the inning. In the 9th, Kirby managed a low split (5) to get a single but then got a 19 on his stolen base attempt. In the 11th, Boston loaded the bases with one out and KC brough in Magnante to face Mo Vaughn. Vaughn had a 1-8 chance at a grand slam (really about 1-100 with the splits I get) and of course missed it, settling for a 3 run double. Henke came on and did what he does best, allow a homer to the first batter he faced but then settled down to get the next 3 to save the 4-2 win.
