Al Downing took a no-hitter into the 8th inning as theNew York AL Yankees
defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 2 to 0 at Candlestick
Park.

Downing(8-10) simply dominated San Francisco.  He didn't allow much, just 2
hits and 5 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.14 to 3.90.  The
left-handed Downing lost his chance for a no-hitter when Harvey Kuenn singled
with nobody out in the 8th inning.  New York AL had only 6 hits for the
afternoon.

Ron Herbel(4-10) was the loser.  'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Downing
said.  'It's great to be back on the winning side of things.'

Second baseman Jim Davenport lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI
at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco Giants beat the New York AL Yankees
by the count of 3 to 1.

San Francisco started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half
of the first when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits.  That scoring would be all
that was needed.  Neither team managed to score after the 2nd inning.

Hank Aguirre(11-4) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings. Gaylord
Perry got the save, his 1st.  Jim Bouton(7-10) was given the loss.  He
pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits and 1 walk.
