Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 7 (plus new CM)
Despite being outscored 21-14 in regulation, in a series where the teams combined for 14 homers, the Orioles won two of three in Arlington. Game 1: BAA 7, TEA 6 This game should have had an even higher score. The teams combined to leave 20 runners on base, and it took till the bottom of the 4th to have a half inning where no one reached scoring position. Texas starter Kenny Rogers’ 2nd inning error set up an RBI double by David Segui to give Baltimore a one-run lead, but the Rangers took advantage of a Leo Gomez error in the 3rd for a two-run rally. The Rangers made it 3-1 with a groundout in the 5th, but in the top of the 6th a solo homer by Mike Devereaux and two subsequent singles chased Rogers and set up Jack Voigt’s three-run shot for a 5-3 Orioles lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Texas chased Baltimore starter Greg Swindell but could only muster one run. In the bottom of the seventh, seeing that lefty Rafael Palmeiro had been cold, Orioles manager Charlie Steinhice left righty reliever on the mound – and watched as Palmeiro hit a two-run homer to put Texas back on top 6-5. Baltimore countered with two runs in the 8th and had the bases loaded with one out, but could score no more, making for a tense 9th before Gregg Olson came in for his 7th save. Game 2: BAA 13, TEA 6 (10) No, that’s not a typo. Baltimore’s Todd Benzinger led off the top of the 2nd with a homer off Roger Pavlik for the game’s first run, and Brady Anderson did the same in the 3rd to put the O’s up 2-0. In the 4th, a rare passed ball by Ivan Rodriguez set the stage for a successful suicide squeeze by Anderson, but Texas got that run back on a sac fly to make it 3-1. Note that none of those runs involved a hit with a runner in scoring position. In the 5th Chris Hoiles broke that streak with an RBI single for a 4-1 Orioles lead, which was promptly erased by a bases-clearing Juan Gonzalez double that sent Ben McDonald to an early shower despite only allowing 5 hits. In the 7th, after lead-footed Todd Benziger doubles, the decision to bring Mike Devereaux in as a pinch-runner paid off as he beat a strong throw to score on a single by Segui – and it paid double dividends in the 8th when Devereaux’s two-out RBI single made it 6-4 Orioles. A strong performance in relief by Tom Edens went for naught when he gave way to Lee Guetterman with one out in the 8th . The result: Single, single, walk, single, tie game, shower, extra innings. Or more accurately, extra inning. With one out in the top of the tenth, tired Rangers reliever Les Lancaster hit Craig Biggio and paid dearly as Harold Baines went yard to give the Orioles a two-run lead. After Lancaster walked the next batter, Todd Burns came in and served up another gopher ball to Hoiles. One out later, Cal Ripken singled in another run, and Anderson improbably hit the third two-run homer of the inning for the final margin. Even with all those runs, the teams again combined for 20 runners LOB. Game 3: TEA 9, BAA 1 Maybe the Orioles should have claimed Jamie Moyer pre-draft after all. The Rangers’ Albert Belle started the scoring in the first with a homer off Mike Mussina. Sounds normal, except that this one was an inside-the-park job. Juan Gonzalez followed it with the standard kind for two-run Texas lead. Rodriguez doubled in a run in the 2nd, and Gonzalez went yard again in the 3rd to make it 4-0. After Mussina gave up his fourth solo homer of the game in the 4th to Rodriguez, the Orioles finally scratched out a run against Moyer on a 5th inning sac fly by Devereaux. The bottom of the fifth finally ended Mussina’s night; Lance Johnson tripled and scored, and Rafael Palmeiro hit a two-run homer for an 8-1 lead. The bottom of the 7th was particularly galling to the Orioles. Despite the big lead, Belle stole second and scored on a Palmeiro single, and Palmeiro later advanced from second to third on a flyout. (This is where I wish Strat-o-Matic had a “Brushback” button.) Moyer went the distance for the win. Thanks to Moyer’s efficiency (six hits, one walk) and Mussina’s inefficiency (nine baserunners, eight runs), the teams only left ten runners on base this time. |
