Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds, miracle of miracles, actually played the way we're supposed to when facing a weaker team.  If we'd done this at all during the past 7 weeks, we'd be about a game and a half out of first place instead of merely sabotaging our lottery seeding....

Game 1: The Padres ballpark gives up easy BPHRs, unless the batter is wearing a Cincinnati uniform, apparently.  We stared this game off by missing one, then added two more later (the Padres of course went 1 for 1) as Tom Browning, making his season debut, predictably found himself down by the count of 5-1 in the middle innings.

San Diego batting practice starter Mark Clark was busy being unhittable, but the Reds finally rallied slightly in the 6th when Felix Jose delivered a 2-run double to cut the deficit to 5-3.  Clark went for the complete game but didn't quite get it (8.2 IP) and the reason he didn't was because ex-Padre Thomas Howard pinch hit with 2 RISP and 2 outs in the 9th -- and came through with the hit that tied the game!!!

At long last, the Reds avoided going 0 for 4 in easy ballpark home run chances when Reggie Sanders connected for a 2-run blast in the 10th and we eked out a 7-5 win.  The Reds were outhit by the massive margin of 16-8, but got 4 BB & 2 E and therefore managed to LOB almost exactly as many as the Padres.

Game 2: At that point the Padres, except for one dedicated Cincy-killer, stopped hitting almost entirely.  The two runs they plated in the 4th inning of game 1 would be their last for the series.

Today, Kevin Gross scattered 6 hits and tossed a complete game but looked like he might still avoid victory as the Reds batters were doing even worse against Andy Benes.  He combined with the ridiculous Pat Gomez to limit the hapless Cincy offense to 4 hits.

One of those was a solo homer by Chris Sabo, but the majority of our runs were donated by a Tony Gwynn throwing error in the 6th.  Final score: 3-0.  Gross walked nobody and fanned 7; Benes & Gomez combined for 10 K's.

========================================================

Game 3: Tim Belcher echoed Gross's performance (9 IP, 0 runs, 1 BB, 8 K's) and a couple of scrap heap pickups had big days for the Reds, who won by the score of 6-0.  Casey Candaele had no hits but started 3 DPs, mainly on x-plays.  Thomas Howard hurt his old mates again by getting 3 hits including a rare home run, driving in a pair and stealing 2 bases.  Seldom-used benchwarmer Tim Costo had a pair of hits, both of them doubles, and scored twice.

Doug Brocail (6.2 IP, 18 total bases allowed) took the loss for San Diego.

SDN's Chad Curtis entered this week already doing far better against the Reds than any other team, and he added to the damage with an 8 for 11 series, slugging .818 and being on base 75% of the time.  Fortunately no one else followed his lead.

Alan
