Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals
The utter lucklessness so prominently displayed in Toronto home games is now carrying over to the road, as we go into Kansas City and lose 2 (at least it wasn't 3) dismal games to a team playing well below .500 baseball and forfeit first place in the East, probably permanently.... Game 1: Some pitchers returning from a well-deserved stint in the minors apparently experience a little bit of "beginner's luck" when they first return, before eventually being pounded regularly into submission (see also Stottlemyre, Todd). Today's beneficiary was former #1 draft pick Jack Morris, who made his 1993 debut with a shutout against the Royals. Final score: 8-0. Morris scattered 8 singles, 1 double, 1 walk and fanned 10 (!) as he went the distance in what will obviously be his finest outing of the season. Good to get that out of the way early.... The TOA offense was led by the trio of Olerud, Orsulak & Livingstone who combined for a 14 5 9 4 line with a couple of doubles. KCA starter Kevin Appier's solid season was interrupted by this outing in which he permitted 12 hits and 4 walks in less than 7 IP. =============================================================== Game 2: A talented Kansas City starter who hadn't been doing quite so well saved his very best for the Jays, as David Cone skunked the hapless Toronto offense and allowed just 1 run (unearned) in 7 IP. Toronto took a 1-0 lead right away thanks to 2 botched plays by the 4e88 whom the Royals use as a shortstop, but HAL woke up and saw to it that we hit nothing more in his direction for the remainder of the series. Pete Incavligia and HAL were a two-man wrecking crew against the Jays today, starting off with the predictable (albeit microscopic probability) HR 1, fb(B) 2-20 in which Inky naturally found the '1' and plated a pair in the 4th off of luckless starter Juan Guzman. Two frames later he did the same thing, but without the surgical split card this time, his 2-out gopher making the score 4-1. Finally in the 8th he tacked on RBI #5 which provided a superfluous insurance run. Final score: 6-1. The Royals made the most of their 9 baserunners, losing 1 on a DP and LOBbing just 2. =============================================================== Game 3: Episode #2,046,901 of "Nobody Chokes Like The Blue Jays". The Guzman (Jose) which K.C. started doesn't have quite the talent of Toronto's Guzman, but he has a lot more luck and consequently took a 1-0 lead into the 6th inning. At that point we took a brief timeout from our 15 LOB performance to score a pair on a sac fly and a groundout. Another mighty sac fly in the 8th, plus an RBI single, put the visitors up 4-1 with just 3 outs left to get. Starter Bobby Witt suddenly settled into "not wild, but hittable" mode and the Royals made it 4-2 with just 2 outs left to get. Enter Duane Ward. Ward may have started off a bit out of sorts this year (1.93 ERA in his first 15 appearances) but he has finally come around to typical form (10.38 ERA in his last 4 outings). Today he was spectacular, coming in and giving up the "Perfect Sambito" as Mike Macfarlane greeted the Toronto arsonist with an immediate game-tying gopher! The contest dragged on from there as the Jays LOBbed 2 in the 10th and 3 in the 11th before our nemesis Incaviglia nailed the Toronto coffin shut with a 2-out (what else?) RBI in the bottom of the 15th. Final score: 5-4. Toronto stranded 15 runners despite hitting into 3 timely DPs, all 3 of them prior to extra innings. Alan |
