In real life SD is in Pittsburgh and beating the Pirates senseless. Will the game imitate real life? Yeah, right.....
game 1: A walk, single+error and sb+error get the Pirates 2 first inning runs. Archi Cianfrocca tied it in the 2nd with a 2 run shot and Jason Grimsley helped himself with a sac fly after speedster Brad Ausmus tripled. Pirates tied it in the 3rd and went ahead in the 5th when Bell tripled and scored. Padres tied it in the 8th on a walk, single, sac bunt and sac fly. The bunt and sac fly would be the first 2 of 22 straight batters retired by both sides as the bullpens did their jobs. Pirates finally got a hit in the 11th but couldn't bring him in. In the 12th, David West came on with one out and Tony Gwynn came in to pinch hit. Gwynn rolled West's loaded 6 column. It's mostly walks but only 1 true out in the column (a couple of lf(x) and a cf(x) as well). Not only did Gwynn get the one out, it was a strike out, 1 of 3 Gwynn could get by then end of game 2. In the bottom of the 12th, Frey got the first 2 outs before going full Steve Blass mode. 3 straight walks preceded a Lonnie Smith game winning single and the Buccos win 5-4.
game 2: With an already thin/bad bullpen worn out, Craig Lefferts was told he had to go deep in the game. Apparently all he heard was go deep. He allowed 2 homers (splits of 1 and 3) while ringing up 160 pitches in 6 innings. He managed to avoid the Pirate bats a few times (6 k's) but found them more often than not (15 hits). Young and Henderson hit the 2 homers and combined to drive in 10 of the Pirates 12 runs. Pirates wasted Dennis Boucher's good card against the Padres but he did manage to get his first win. Padres got 2 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to make the final "only" 12-5. Speedster Ausmus tripled for the 2nd straight game.
game 3: Tim Worrell had his best game of the year (not saying much when you look at his other games) and got his first win of the year. Padres got 3 singles and a hbp in the first but could only score one time. Easley had an rbi single in the 6th and Caminiti hit his 5th homer in the 8th for the Padres offense. Tino Martinez homered in the 5th. In the 8th, the Pirates started with walk, double, pb to get a run in but Davis was able to get out of the inning without further damage to maintain the lead. Hoffman had a 1-2-3 9th for his 6th save. While Caminiti somehow managed to homer the Padres got an 11 on a 10 and an 8 on a 1-7 on earlier hr chances.
Sad stat of the week: After a scoreless 1/3 of an inning in his first appearance, Lefferts era has climbed after each of his last 7 appearances. While not bad in itself, keep in mind his era was 7.46 3 appearances ago and now sits at 9.40. He has allowed 67 hits in 37 innings and has given up at least 2.5/inning over his last 4 appearances.
