Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox

The Jays eke out a close win (that shouldn't have been so close) in the opener and then split a pair of blowouts....

Game 1: Toronto prevailed by the score of 5-3 in a see-saw contest that saw us trailing 3-2 in the 4th, at that point blowing a 2-run lead thanks to a 4-base blown-x howler by a TOA outfielder -- not our last one of the series either -- which plated 2 runs with 2 outs.  We came back with a couple of 2-out RBI of our own moments later, and Devon White's solo homer in the 7th completed the day's scoring against Boston starter Danny Darwin.

Nobody knows how he does it, but scrub starter Todd Stottlemyre (3-2, 2.63) continues to roll on while staff members with far better cards continue their season-long underachievement.  Stottlemyre's record doesn't reveal how well he's pitched, but his ERA does.  Today he permitted just 1 earned run in 8.2 IP and Duane Ward accidentally recorded the final out without choking up the tying run.

================================================

Game 2: Pushing the "Stottlemyre Effect" just a bit too far, Jack Morris (whose first start resulted in a fluke shutout) crashed back to earth in start #2.  Final score: 6-2.  Morris allowed his first run of 1993 in the opening frame, but had still not permitted an *earned* run; the TOA defense was brutal all series long while Boston's nobody-better-than-a-3 squad played way over their heads.

Morris' season unraveled in the 4th when 3 free passes sandwiched a surgical split card triple, and his wildness persisted an inning later and the score was 5-0.

Roger Clemens tossed 7 shutout innings for the Sox, and the scoreboard wasn't dented (despite numerous chances) by the Jays until Paul Quantrill came in and was torched, but he left quickly and the Toronto offense just as quickly resumed its ineptitude.

================================================

Game 3: The Jays eventually got back to business but it didn't start out that way.  Our 2-0 lead in the first vanished in the second via 4-base outfield blown-x howler #2 of the series, with Luckless Jim Abbott on the mound, and a Si 1-3 kept the inning alive so that yet another super-surgical split card could cost Abbott some more runs when Tony Pena gophered one out of the park.  It's no fun being the unluckiest pitcher on the unluckiest staff in the league; Boston led 4-2.

Finally in the 4th, Boston starter Joe Hesketh ran out of options against the righty-laden Toronto lineup and we canceled out the 4-spot which had been choked up two frames earlier.  Today the Boston bullpen wasn't able to keep the lid on either.  Final score: 10-4.  Abbott registered a complete game and performed effectively after the near-disaster in the 2nd, lowering his ERA to a still-astronomical 5.73, but that's the lowest it's been since early April.

The Jays banged out 17 hits had countless opportunities to practically double our run count, but instead settled for station-to-station baserunning and a lopsided 12-3 advantage in LOB, 7 of those 12 dying in scoring position.

Alan
