Boston goes into the Twin Cities and sweep the Twins in convincing fashion. For some reason, playing in Minnesota brings out the best in the Boston offense, going back to 1975 when Dwight Evans hit 4 homers in a game (and the Sox had back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers as well)
game 1: After a quiet first that saw six up and six down the Sox went crazy in the 2nd. They sent 14 men to the plate garnering 9 hits (3 2b and a hr), 2 walks and 10 runs. Eric Anthony struck out for the first out of the inning (as the 3rd batter) and then hit a 3 run homer in the inning to atone for his out. Then in the 7th, with 2 outs, Boston got 2b,bb,1b,1b,2b,1b,2b to score 6 more times. They won 16-1 and totaled 21 hits.7 players had at least 2 hits for the game. Lost in the offense wasrookie Aaron Sele's performance. He went the distance allowing just 1 unearned run on 6 hits. He didn't walk anyone and had 11 strikeouts.
game 2: Boston wasted no time in getting on the board in this one. Kirby singled and Oquendo brought him home with a 2b to start the game. Valentin homered in the 4th and doubled in a run in the 5th to complete Boston's scoring. Meanwhile, JohnDopson was pulling his Aaron Sele impersonation. He went 7 shutout innings and allowed just 5 hits and 3 walks. Henke wild pitched a run in with 2 outs in the 9th to spoil the shutout. Sox won 3-1.
game 3: Boston had their 3rd big inning of the series to open this one. They sent 11 men to the plate and scored 6 times on 6 single, a double and an error. Danny Darwin was in a generous mood and gave back 2 in the first and second to make it 6-4.Valentin homered for the 2nd straight game for a run in the 7th and another scored in the 8th on a passed ball. Eichorn allowed a run in the 8th before Henke had a relatively easy 9th for his 6th save as Boston won 8-5.
sad fact of the week: Boston's 16 runs in game 1 were more than they scored in their previous 7 road games combined. They had 15 runs and were shutout in 3 of the 7 games.
With his stolen base in the first inning of game 3 (to go with his cs at home earlier in the week), Kirby made Boston 8-20 for stolen bases on the season now.
