Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers
Although Toronto's season of utter lucklessness in home games continues unabated no matter how much more talented we are than our opponent, the Jays continue to at least tread water on the road. This week we won a close game that turned into a laugher, suffered a fatal gopher attack, then won a laugher that (almost) turned into a close game.... Game 1: The Jays jumped on Texas ace Kevin Brown and took a 6-1 lead in the 4th, but TOA starter Jack Morris slowly bled the advantage down to 6-4 before being yanked from the mound. Brown hung around and gave up another pair of runs in the 8th as we tacked on a total of 5 to prevail by the misleading score of 11-4. Jesse Orosco provided 2.2 innings of scoreless work and comic reliever Gene Harris contributed a 1-2-3 9th since the outcome was not in doubt. Toronto amassed 15 hits, 4 of them by John Olerud (5 2 4 1, double, homer). Olerud has commenced hitting lately, discarding the well-deserved Massive Underachiever label and moving up to ordinary Underachiever. The Jays achieved the trivial triumvirate of having a WP, PB and BK in the same game and would notch 2 of those 3 on the following day as well. =========================================== Game 2: Kenny Rogers pitched 6.2 shutout innings for the Rangers while Brian Williams was gophered thrice by a pair of Gonzalezes and lost by the count of 6-1. Though only narrowly outhit overall, the Jays came up with our customary zero in the clutch hit department and did not get on the scoreboard until a wild pitch and sac fly gave us a pity run in the 9th. =========================================== Game 3: We made short work of Texas starter Jamie Moyer (0.2 IP, 5 runs), built a 9-0 lead and coasted downhill to a 9-3 win. Bobby Witt had a rare quality start, going 6 innings and walking nobody, but allowing more than 1 hit per inning as usual (but just 2 runs). Reliever Tony Castillo helped our opponent's comeback attempt as much as he could (2 IP, 5 baserunners) but Duane Ward, like Harris in the opener, registered a 1-2-3 9th since it was not a save situation. A pair of massive underachievers led the Toronto attack: sub-.200 hitter Ed Sprague got the ball rolling with a Grand Slam in the first and had 5 RBI for the day on just 1 hit; and Joe Carter is finally threatening the .250 mark after a 5 1 3 4 day that included a double.
