The unluckiest team in the league is required to be stomped at least once per week (it was game 2 in this particular series) but we achieved a couple of incomplete chokes in the bookends and managed a rare series win....

Game 1: Cincy got a pair of runs in the first and eventually built a 4-1 lead despite stranding runners in scoring position in 3 of the first 4 frames.  But the only reason we came out on the good side of the 4-3 final was because the Cardinals LOBbed even more.

CIN starter Tim Pugh dodged bullets for nearly 7 innings, allowing just 1 run, and then on came the comedy act known as the Cincinnati bullpen.  Jerry Spradlin choked up a storm in the SLN 8th, and Steve Foster nearly was able to minimize the damage but simply couldn't resist permitting a clutch single to reduce our lead to 1.

Johnny Ruffin was given the chance to close it out, and naturally gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the 9th.  But somehow he was able to retire the side without further incident and kept the tying run at third base, thereby earning his first career save.

==================================================

Game 2: St. Louis gopher machine (and plenty of other hits too) Mike Moore has pitched way over his head so far in 1993, and facing a luckless unit like the Reds that pattern was hardly likely to change on this day.  It didn't.

John Smiley started the season well for the Reds, by our lowly standards anyway, but HAL has used him as a punching bag ever since and that's something that also didn't change on this day.  Smiley was bombed for 7 runs in less than 3 innings and the mighty Cincy offense didn't bother to even try to score until we were down by 12.  Final score: 12-3.

Every SLN batter aside from Moore got a hit, nearly all of them more than one.  Ruffin, yesterday's "hero", resumed his typical brutal form by donating 6 baserunners in 2 IP, 5 of which scored.  In the process of racking up 12 runs against the hapless Reds, the suddenly highly-efficient Cardinals managed to strand a mere 3 runners.

==================================================

Game 3: With just about the worst bullpen in league history** entirely fatigued, it was fortunate that our one and only non-underachieving pitcher (Kevin Gross) was set to take the mound against SLN batting practice hurler Rene Arocha and his 6+ ERA.

Unsurprisingly, Arocha came through with one of his few good starts of the year (as he did the first time he faced the Reds too) but Gross was up to the challenge -- barely.

Cincy put 3 runs on the board before Arocha could retire his second batter of the day, then completely shut down the offense for the remainder of the day.  Gross quickly gave back 2 of those runs, one of them being unearned thanks to a timely Cincy error and a balk.

Gross had a chance to deliver an insurance RBI himself in the 6th, but needed to draw split card of 18 or less to do it, so of course he failed.  But he didn't need it -- after allowing a single to non-hitting pitcher Arocha in the SLN 4th, Gross permitted no further baserunners until Todd Zeile's 1-out double in the 9th.  With the Ultimate Arson Squad unavailable, Gross had no choice but to finish it out himself, one way or another.  He retired the final two batters and escaped with a 3-2 win.

**  Only 2 teams in 46 seasons -- and none since 1951 -- have had bullpens which allowed more than half of their inherited runners to score.  The 1993 Reds are on pace to become the third (as are the Twins, but any team is far more likely to turn it around than the luckless Reds; wait and see).
