Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
The underachievingest team in the league in home games awaits whatever microscopic-probability disaster awaits us this week, as in so many other weeks. In the meantime the Tigers tried to hand us a road sweep via numerous unsuccessful guerrilla maneuvers on the bases, but HAL wouldn't hear of it.... Game 1: The one non-contest of the series, as Toronto LOBbed 11 and racked up 9 of our beloved 'RLISP 2-out', but a game that was scoreless into the 4th still became an 8-2 win for the Jays despite all that. A couple of ex-Tigers led the way: Scott Livingstone was 2 for 4 with a double & run scored. But the true returning hero was pitcher Jack Morris, who ran his abbreviated 1993 record to 3-1 with a complete game in which he scattered 7 hits, all of them singles; Toronto recorded 14 hits off of 4 Detroit hurlers. With the score 2-1 after 4, the visitors scored three times in each of the next 2 frames. Just-acquired free agent reliever Kevin King shut down the Jays for the final anticlimactic 2.1 innings, and would also perform decently (though not unscathed) in the series finale, while the rest of the DEA bullpen was sadly (for them) Toronto-esque. ====================================================== Game 2: Our top of the first rally ended with just 1 run scoring thanks to a spectacular catch by Kirk '4' Gibson in center field. A blink of an eye later, HAL had one of Toronto's good fielders botch an easy grounder and the Tigers were rolling. Of course that runner scored as did one other, the latter on a run-scoring wild pitch by TOA starter Brian Williams, who probably set a record today (read on). The Jays did not exactly find Scott Sanderson to be a mystery (6.2 IP, 12 baserunners) and had cut the deficit to 5-4 in the 5th when Williams went nuts with 2 outs (naturally) and a man on first. Showing no respect for Mickey Tettleton's ability to deliver the critical run, Williams uncorked a wild pitch. And then another. And then another. 6-4, Detroit. Tiger runners were helpfully gunned down trying to steal in each of the next two frames (one had reached on an error, so that was only fair), which gave us a chance at a comeback -- that actually happened! The Jays got 2 in the 9th to make it 6-6, but that served to merely set up one of our patented chokes -- which also actually happened. In the bottom of the 10th, a frame that featured wild pitch #5, the Mick ended it with a 2-run gopher. Final score: 8-6. Jays outhit the Tigers 14-10, but out-LOBbed them by a whopping 10-5 and simply couldn't overcome that, plus all the cheap runs via errors and wild pitches almost too numerous to count. ====================================================== Game 3: Two starting pitchers with miserable ERA's but stellar records (a combined 10-3 before today, 11-4 now) both pitched a little better than usual but nothing to brag about. Bobby Witt got the better of it by allowing just 3 runs in 7 IP despite 17 baserunners, NINE of which reached base without having to swing the bat. DEA's Mark Leiter was only slightly worse, as the clutchless Toronto offense also LOBbed whenever possible, particularly with RISP. Toronto blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2, then took a 4-3 lead in the 7th when a run managed to score before we LOBbed yet another RISP. Then Detroit -- deservedly, but inexplicably -- failed to score in their half of the inning where they got an HBP, 2 walks & a wild pitch. The game was iced in the TOA 9th on a home run that was followed by 3 doubles. HAL permitted Duane Ward to roll on his own card for a rare change, and therefore he was able to earn save #8. Ward, perennially the most devastating closer (to his own team) in the majors, is only being allowed to roll on his own card barely 40% of the time so far in 1993. And when he doesn't, the "average" hitter against him turns out to be Babe Ruth on steroids. Thanks, HAL. Alan |
