Padres come a half game away from a sweep in the Mile High City (and I mean actually winning in a sweep)
game 1: Padres got 1 in the top of the first but left the bases loaded. After Castilla led off with a k, the Rockies got bb,1b,bb,2b,1b to take a 4-1 lead. They added 2 more in the 3rd on 2 homers that totaled 5 on the splits (2 and 3). The Padres started their comeback in the 5th. Curtis doubled and scored on a double. In the 6th, Cianfrocca hit a 3 run homer and Gutierrez doubled and scored to tie the game. Rockies got 2 singles and a sac fly to go right back on top. The Padres took the lead in the 8th, using 5 hits (3 doubles), a wp and an intentional walk, to score 5 times. They added another in the 9th to win 12-7.
game 2: Again, not a good start in this one for SD. Galarraga got a bp auto hr in the first to put Colorado on the board. Funny thing was that was the extent of their offense. Jason Grimsley and 2 relievers combined to allow just 4 hits and no walks. Caminiti homered leading off the second to tie in and Discarcina had an rbi single in the 3rd to put SD on top for good. Padres added 2 runs in the 5th and held on for the 4-1 win.
game 3: Starting Andy Ashby against the all right handed lineup seemed like suicide and it was in the first inning. After Gwynn's rbi single gave the Padres a 1-0 lead, Colorado scored 4 times in the bottom of the inning. The first 5 batters rolled 6-9,6-6,6-8,1-6,6-7 (someone the first 2 were outs). Padres tied it in the 3rd and took the lead in the 5th on Gwynn's 2 run double. Then the bottom dropped out for the Padres. Ashby left after loading the bases with 1 out. Clark came on and gave up a 2 run single to the first batter to tie the game before getting out of the inning. In the 6th, the Rockies put it away in a 2 batter stretch, with 2 on and 1 out, Galaragga tripled on a split of 1 and Bichette followed with a bp auto homer to make it 8-4. Sensing the game was over, Padres brought in Craig Lefferts and he gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and a walk in the 7th inning. He allowed 2 homers (making 18 in 68 innings) and had 2 others end up as singles thanks to W hitters (both on 1-8 flyout chances). Colorado strolled to a 14-4 win.
SD actually outhit the Rockies 38-35 for the series, drew more walks (14-6) and out stranded them 30-20. The Rockies did win the home run contest 6-2.
