Subject: Florida @ St.Louis
The Marlins found a way to stretch their road winning streak to 2. They also split a road series. Those are not bad results for a team winning less than 1 out of 3 in their expansion season.
G1 Florida's lefty John Cummings (6 4 1 1 2 7) shut out the home team for 6 innings while the Marlins built a 3-0 lead. After the 7th inning stretch, St.Louis finally solved the ex-Mariners' farmhand. Mark Whiten and Gary Gaetti greeted Cummings with long gappers and the score was 3-1 with Gaetti at 2nd base. Bill Landrum and Paul Miller shut down the 7th with nofurther damage and Florida took its 2-run lead to the 9th. The Cards' Gregg Jefferies led off the 9th with a solo HR off of closer Todd Worrell. However, Worrell found his resolve and completed his 9th save by striking out Whiten before inducing groundouts from Gaetti and Bernard Gilkey. This allowed Cummings to win his first ML game behind the support of Tim Wallach whose 2-run tater in the 5th got Florida on the scoreboard.
Final Score: Florida 3, St.Louis 2 WP- Cummings 1-3, LP- Moore 7-5, SV- Worrell (9) HR- Wallach (2), Jefferies (4)
G2 The Marlins tried to stretch the road winning streak to 3, but failed to bring their leather with them to Busch Stadium for this one. Not only did Florida commit 3 errors, but starting pitcher Ryan Bowen's(4 2/3 8 9 4 3 4) 1st inning error led to 5 unearned runs. The Marlins tried to stay with St.Louis, and hung in admirably. When Darrell Whitmore launched a 3-run homer in the 5th, that blow tied the game at 6-6.
Unfortunately, Bowen could not live with that support and promptly gave up 3 runs of his own in the bottom of the 5th. The main blow was Gilkey's 2-run double which was followed by Ozzie Smith's RBI-single. Both teams tacked on runs late, but the 3-run margin stood up for St.Louis. The Cardinals' Rene Arocha (6 1/3 12 6 6 3 4) benefited from his teammates' 10 runs of support. Chuck Carr was quite the table-setter for Floridaas he went 4-for-5 with 3 steals out of the leadoff spot while the "Wizard" of St.Louis raised his average to .340 with a 3-for-5 effort.
Final Score: St.Louis 10, Florida 7 WP- Arocha 5-10, LP- Bowen 3-8, SV- L.Smith (11) HR- Santiago (11), Whitmore (4), Snow (3)
G3 was a one-sided affair in favor of the Cardinals. St.Louis scored 3 in the first and never looked back from there. As in game 2, the Marlins were very generous with their fielding as 3 errors were committed in the 1st frame. That was all the support Donovan Osborne needed (6 2/3 5 1 1 0 3) as he notched his 4th victory.
The game was still in suspense in the 7th as St.Louis led, 4-1. However, the Cards plated 5 runs with the big blow being Gilkey's grand slam. Gilkey finished 2-for-3 with 2 walks and the grand salami as St.Louis' leadoff man, and JT Snow went deep for the 2nd straight game. The Cards out-hit Florida (9-8) for the first time in the series.
Final Score: St.Louis 10, Florida 2 WP- Osborne 4-7, LP- Armstrong 3-8, SV- Grahe (5) HR- Redus (9), Gilkey (8), Snow (4)
G4 For the 3rd straight game St.Louis tallied multiple runs in the 1st inning. This time there were no errors involved as Jefferies singled with 2 outs and Whiten followed with a long home run. Both starters settled in at that point, and the Marlins didn't get on the board until Rheal Cormier (6 2/3 9 2 2 3 3) uncorked a bases-loaded wild pitch in the 6th which allowed Orestes Destrade to trot home. In the 7th, Florida tied the score, 2-2, when Gary Redus doubled and with 2 outs Destrade brought him home with a single.
Chris Hammond (5 4 2 2 2 3), the Marlins' starter, had departed by then, and so this one would be decided by the two teams' bullpens. Florida scored for a 3rd consecutive inning in the 8th when PH Alex Arias delivered Santiago from 2nd base with a 2-out RBI single (BP homer, W power). Paul Miller got the first two outs of the 8th for Florida before Worrell was summoned. The closer for the Fish got 3 straight outs before PH Tim Salmon singled with 2 outs in the 9th. However, Santiago gunned down Salmon at 2B trying to steal with PH Pete O'Brien at the plate to end the game. Gilkey's 3 hits paced both teams in the finale.
