Sox take the opener then drop 3 straight.
game 1: Darwin and Guzman hooked up for a good pitchers duel as they both went the distance in this one. Guzman allowed just 4 hits but his temporary wildness cost him in the 5th. A hit batter and single put runners on the corners with 2 out when Guzman walked 3 straight (of his 4 total) to force in 2 runs. Valentin then found the one out in a sea of on base chances to end the inning. Meanwhile Darwin took a shutout into the 8th before allowing 2 doubles but held on for the 2-1 win.
game 2: Back on April 25th of this season, Roger Clemens went 8 innings allowed 2 hits and 1 run and lost. He nearly repeated that performance today. He allowed 3 hits in 8 inning and lost 1-0. Just like the April game, the run was a homerun (this one in the 8th inning to Greg Myers). He has now allowed 17 of the 18 he should allow, even though he is just half way through his innings. Lost in all of this was Pat Hentgen tossing a 5 hit shutout.
In Darwin and Clemens had no luck, what chance did Haney and Hesketh have? none as expected.
game 3: Haney actually pitched 5 innings on 1 hit ball (innings 2-6). Unfortunately, he pitched innings 1, 7 and 8 as well.He allowed 9 runs on 10 hits in those 3 innings. Both teams rolled the 5 column fairly often. For one pitcher it was an empty column. For the other only 2 on base chances (walk on 5-6 and 2b/1b on 5-7) that the opposition found repeatedly. It took Toronto just 4 batters in the first to score as many runs as they had in the first 2 games combined. Deer and Greenwell hit solo homers for Boston as they made Jim Abbott look good for once this year.
game 4: Stop the presses. Boston actually was successful on a stolen base attempt (now 12-28 as a team). Kirby singled, stole second went to third on a grounder and scored on a sac fly in the first. Toronto used an error, walk and 3 singles to score 3 times in the 2nd. Rob Deer's solo homer in the 4th tied the game up and stayed that way until the 6th. A successful hit and run (on a 1b 1-4) chance highlighted the 2 run inning and Toronto held on for a 5-3 win.
Despite being 23 games under .500 at this point of the season, Boston has only been outscored by 26 runs. They are tied for 2nd with 16 one run losses (behind SD go figure). They have 2 1-0 losses and 4 2-1 losses (3 of which came in a 4 game road span). All 6 of those losses have come on the road.
