Just a typical Mile High series, where the teams combined for 54 runs and 96 hits in 3 games. What was hardly typical is that the unluckiest team in the majors won 2 of the 3 games (barely) despite HAL's typical dirty tricks like having us miss slim 1-19 chances at home runs, having us play sabotage defense (as the not-exactly '1'-laden Rockies were almost flawless) and performing surgery on Cincy pitchers in astounding fashion as the home team took full advantage of its ballpark while the visitors did not.... Game 1: Luckless Jose Rijo and the hapless pitchers who followed were done in by numerous gopher bites, other extra-base hits and stolen bases galore (including 2 by players who entered the game with a combined total of zero). Though outhit only 12-8, the Reds come up way short on the scoreboard, 9-2. Seven of the 9 scored with, naturally, 2 outs in an inning as so often happens to the Reds. Andres Galarraga gophered & had 4 RBI on his way to another monster series, while Dante '.400' Bichette was held in check until the football game that was the series finale broke out. ==================================================================== Game 2: It was anything but pretty, but Luckless Jeff Brantley tossed a complete game 12-hitter (and was only gophered twice -- both by Galarraga) and Brantley's teammates built an early 11-2 lead before letting off the gas pedal and coasting to a 13-3 win. The contest started poorly enough when the Big Cat gophered up 2-runs with -- what else? -- 2 outs in the first inning, but Cincy responded immediately with a barrage of doubles that should have been home runs and wound up with 21 hits for the day. CON starter Kent Bottenfield was chased after 3 innings, but Steve Reed fared little better. Brantley's control was excellent (perhaps too good), as he fanned 9 Rockies while issuing just 1 free pass. ==================================================================== Game 3: Today it was Bichette whose early automatic gopher put Cincy down by 3, but again we stormed back and had a 5-3 lead in the 5th when HAL had us blow 3 x-plays in one inning to turn the lead into a deficit. Colorado's Willie Blair escaped serious damage -- 14 baserunners in 5 innings but only 5 scored -- and got out of the game with the lead, however Curt Leskanic was destroyed (2 IP, 9 baserunners, *ALL* scored). CIN reliever Larry Luebbers was the beneficiary of that outburst, and was given a 14-7 lead. What followed was one of the ugliest "saves" ever, or rather one of the most amazing incomplete chokes ever (amazing only because incomplete; these are the Reds, after all). John Roper had been surgically dismembered earlier in the series, but that was nothing compared to what he endured today. Roper tossed 3 innings, permitted 11 baserunners and watched helplessly as 6 of them scored. If would have been 7 -- or more -- but after Colorado's ***TENTH*** 2-out RBI of the day, Jerald Clark, representing the tying run, tried to get himself into scoring position but was accidentally gunned down by Joe Oliver. Despite all of their successful 4th-down conversions, Colorado's missed extra point proves costly in the 14-13 final. Alan |
