Subject: Reds @ Expos
Though the Reds have *far* more talent than our major-league leading underachieving won-loss record indicates (world-record underachieving in home games), we still have no business being on the same field with these guys. It really isn't very sportsmanlike when one team has all the talent AND all the luck; it was a phenomenal accomplishment that the Reds even made it somewhat close.... Game 1: Bobby Ayala's second start of 1993 began well, but a 2-out, bases-empty situation in the MON 3rd turned fatal thanks to a perfectly timed blown-x play that was followed by the third out which kept the game scoreless -- no wait! -- there's a '$' next to that out. 2-0, Expos. The Reds eked out a run in the 4th on a modest groundout but negated that comeback in the bottom of the inning. Still down by a run in the 7th, Cincy's Bret Boone tripled and then scored (!) on a Mark Lewis single to tie the contest. Luckless Larry Luebbers had easily put down the Expos for 2 innings and was on the way to making it 3 when HAL had him commit a 2-out, bases-empty error to keep the inning alive. Naturally the next batter doubled him home (no play at the plate; the error had to be a 2-baser so the run was automatic). With 6 outs left to retie the game, the Reds never touched the ball. Final score: another unearned, undeserved 1-run loss, 4-3. ============================================================= Game 2: Having utterly failed in his trials as a reliever, the Reds chose to make John Roper a starter today. Aside from a solo split-card gopher in the MON 2nd, Roper was validating that decision. But his counterpart, Tommy Greene, was tossing a no-hitter at the helpless Reds. Even without getting a hit, we tied the game at 1 in the 4th. HAL didn't appreciate that, and immediately dragged poor Mr. Roper onto the operating table. After a couple of split card hits and a run, Roper issued a free pass, an HBP to load them up, another free pass to force in a run and then the finishing touch: a double by the pitcher to plate a pair and make the surgery a complete success. Montreal scored no further (hardly needing to) and we did get one more run but also turned a very easy split card chance at a critical 2-run homer into just a 2-LOB double. Final score: 5-2. The Reds got the tying run to the plate in the 9th via a pair of hits off of unhittable John Wetteland, but that only served to make our margin in LOB much greater than our deficit in the scoreboard column that actually counts. ============================================================= Game 3: CIN starter Tim Pugh pitched reasonably well (only 1 run allowed) albeit briefly, while his teammates managed nothing against MON starter Ken Hill. The Reds managed to tie the game at 1 in the 5th thanks to a Montreal error, but we don't accept such charity 'round here and the bullpen gave it back immediately by permitting Jeff Bagwell's 2-out surgical split card RBI triple moments later. The run Cincy got in the 9th (after which we left the bases loaded) might have been important if reliever Kevin Gross hadn't suffered another attack of surgical split cards in the MON 8th, and the contest wound up as a 4-2 final. The Reds had the tying runs in scoring position for the final 2 batters of the day, but as usual they couldn't budge anyone. Alan |
