Subject: Reds @ Mets
The Reds begin 1970 with a very tough Week 1 schedule. Somehow we managed to avoid getting *completely* off on the wrong foot by salvaging a split with the defending N.L. champions. Game 1: Tom Seaver makes a successful return to Shea Stadium, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and winning by the score of 3-1. Wayne Simpson was wild, walking 6 batters but allowing only 2 hits in 6 innings in his New York debut. Bernie Carbo's triple off of Danny Frisella broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth, and Tony Perez plated Carbo to give Cincinnati the victory. Game 2: We couldn't beat Sam McDowell if he was blindfolded and had both arms amputated. But we almost did win one against him on this day. Cincy managed two first inning hits off McDowell, but a botched hit & run play resulted in a caught stealing, depriving the Mets of at least one run and (probably) the game. The Mets got ridiculous luck in the first (what else do you call it when somebody like John Boccabella hits a clutch triple?), tallying 3 runs. That was all the Mets would get, and all they'd need. Gary Nolan - after the first inning - matched Sam McDowell pitch for pitch. The starters combined for 23 strikeouts in 15.2 IP. Final score: 3-1. Game 3: Another hideously ridiculous first inning results in a quick 4-0 lead for the home team. Nolan Ryan shut down the Reds for 7 innings, but the NY bullpen sprung a leak and almost allowed a comeback. Final score, 8-6, in the only non-pitchers' duel of the series. Game 4: A must-win game for the Reds, and amazingly we did. Don Wilson held the Mets scoreless in the first inning for a change, but did fall behind 2-0 after 3. A Lee May 2-run homer tied the game in the 4th. May doubled home Pete Rose in the sixth to wrap up the scoring for day, and give the Reds the split. Cincy's bullpen (Don Gullett & Clay Carroll) provided some actual clutch pitching in the late innings, even causing the Mets to leave the bases loaded on one occasion! Carroll threw 2.1 innings of perfect relief to get his first save of 1970. Notes: ====== Each team left 26 men on base in the 4 games. Jerry Grote went 0 for 15 in the series, but NY didn't steal any bases on him either (because they never tried); Bench was 3 for 16 with a double & a homer. Joe Morgan is the early N.L. batting leader, at .571. Cincy's lone morsel of luck in the series was the fact that we went 15 for 16 on x-chances (NY: 12 for 19), despite the fact that many of them were hit to stone-gloves like Perez, Leon & Concepcion. Ken "e4" Boswell at second base made an error in game one; in the real 1970 he committed a total of 2 in 450 chances. Alan |
