Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins

The Twins have struggled against the East this year and the Jays hoped to keep it that way as we visited the Humpty Dome for three.  We succeeded despite the TOA pitching staff's continued underachievement on all cylinders, because the offense scored no fewer than 8 runs in any game....

Game 1: Todd Stottlemyre was subjected to the most microscopically-precise surgery possible, however the Jays rebounded after routinely blowing a 4-run lead and came back to prevail by the score of 8-5.  The game might have been just a tad less close had it not been for our astronomical 15-4 "advantage" in the LOB column.

Stottlemyre has just one lonely hit in his 5 column and HAL had the Twins find it FIVE times -- basically ignoring the other 65 possible dice rolls -- to account for the majority of hits he allowed.  Duane Ward allowed another run charged to the beleaguered starter, then closed it out without any runs being charged to himself as the ace closer lowered his ERA to a sparkling 4.31.

=========================================================

Game 2: The teams were even in hits and baserunners, but the Jays found some of the power that has been lacking all season and therefore made far more efficient use of our runners.  Final score: 9-2.  Bobby Witt, erratic as always, and reliever Tony Castillo (ditto) somehow enticed the home team to leave 10 men on base as the Jays quickly erased a 1-0 deficit and put 9 on the board before Minnesota answered in the 8th.

Joe Carter and Pat Borders each doubled twice while not exactly notable power hitters Jose Vizcaino and Paul Molitor went deep.  Molitor was inexplicably permitted to roll in his loaded 2 column in the series almost more than he had in the first 99 games of the season, an accident not likely to reoccur anytime soon.

=========================================================

Game 3: Once again the hits and baserunners were even, but three errors cost the Twins seven (!) unearned runs which had a significant impact on today's 9-4 outcome.  TOA starter Juan Guzman notched his 9th win with a mediocre outing, and the bullpen provided much excitement as is customary, but didn't quite erase our 9-1 lead.

MNA starter Scott Erickson was hit hard (5.2 IP, 9 hits), allowing 10 baserunners and 9 runs but only 2 of those runs were earned.

Alan
