To quote Cubs announcer Harry Carey:  "cubs lose, cubs lose, cubs lose". Padres sweep while allowing just 3 runs total. They came 1 out away from having 2 shutouts in the series (their first of the year). Tony Gwynn didn't get off the bench the entire series either.

game 1: Steve Traschel has a card that belongs on the Padres (auto homers on 4-8,4-9 bp hr on 6-8 and hr 1-13 on 6-9 not to mention lots of other xbh chances).  Phil Clark did manage to roll a 4-8 leading off the 2nd but HAL managed to avoid the 4 and 6 column (at least the high end) the rest of the day. Gallagher doubled in the 4th and came around on a ground out and wild pitch to complete the days scoring. Storm Davis went 7 innings and allowed just 5 hits while striking out 7 to get his team high 7th win. 3 relievers combined for the last 2 innings to complete the Padres first shutout of the year 2-0.

game 2: The Cubs left side of the field was a big help in the Padres win in this one. Luvello is a 4e48 at ss, Samuel a 4e37 at 3b and Hill a 4e21 in left. They combined to make 4 errors which led to 10 (yes 10) unearned runs for the Padres. Caminiti's sac fly in the first produced the only earned run the Padres scored. Benes gave that right back on a 2 run homer by Wilkins in the bottom of the inning. Clark doubled and came all the way around as Hill misplayed the ball to tie it in the second. Luvello made his first error in the 3rd but that didn't produce a run as the Padres left the bases loaded. In the 4th, Samuel's 2 out error was followed by 1b, iw, 1b, iw, 1b,1b for 7 runs. With the bases loaded in the 9th, Luvello booted a 2 out grounder for a run and Curtis followed with an rbi single to cap the generosity. Benes went 8 innings and allowed just 2 hits. In fact until there were 2 outs in the 9th, the Cubs had committed as many errors as they had hits and runs.....combined.

game 3: Craig Lefferts matched Davis' 7 shutout inning of game 1 to lower his era to 7.75. Caminiti crushed a 2 run bp homer (split of 1) in the 4th for the only offense of the game for SD. Cubs avoided the shutout with an unearned run in the 9th. Frey managed the save dispite 4 of the 5 batters in the 9th rolling his 6 column. 2 managed the 6-4 out while one got a 6-5 double and the other a 6-11 x play single that scored the Cubs run.

sad fact of the week: If Lefferts can make 3 more 7 shutout inning starts in a row his era would still be 6.38.
