Subject: Florida @ St.Louis

G1 Florida continued to hit the ball the way the Marlins had the final game in the Steel City.  This time the Fish scored 3 in the first and 2 more in the 2nd off of Rene Arocha (5 8 6 5 1 3) who somehow pitched 3 more innings before being pulled.  SS Walt Weiss, who is red-hot with an 11-game hitting streak, went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.  His teammate Gary Sheffield's 3-run homer in the first was another primary contributor.  St.Louis got an unearned run off of the Marlins' bullpen, but by then it was too late to make a difference.  Gary Gaetti went 1-for-2 with 2 walks and both Cardinals' runs scored.

Final Score: Florida 8, St.Louis 2
WP- Leiter 4-3, LP- Arocha 5-13
HR- Sheffield (12)

G2 For the 2nd game in a row, Florida came out swinging crazy-hot bats.  With 8 runs through the first 3 innings, Florida led St.Louis 8-3.  It looked pretty bad when Cardinal starter Donovan Osborne allowed 7 runs in 1 2/3 innings.  But, Jack Armstrong outdid the lefty when he allowed 10 runs in 6 1/3 innings and by then St.Louis had overcome the early deficit and had taken a 10-9 lead.   Florida was not through though.  The Marlins' Orestes Destrade singled with one out in the 9th and PR Chuck Carr stole 2nd and 3rd off of reliever Lee Smith before Gary Sheffield lofted a fly ball which tied the game at 10-10.  However, in the bottom of the 9th, St.Louis sent its fans home happy.  After Brian Anderson retired Ray Lankford for the 1st out, Todd Worrell was summoned into the game and the Cardinals answered that move with Eric Pappas and Gaetti singling in front of Bernard Gilkey's GW 3-run homer.  It was one wild contest. Jeff Conine had a terrific game- 2-for-5 with 2 HR and 5 RBI.

Final Score: St.Louis 13, Florida 10
WP- L.Smith 7-2, LP- T.Worrell 2-6
HR- Conine 2 (8), Sheffield (13), Salmon (18), Snow (7), Gilkey (12)

G3 This game ended up being quite similar to its predecessor.  Florida scored in 5 of the first 6 innings to take an 8-6 lead after 6 complete.  Marlins' starter Chris Hammond lasted 2 1/3 innings and Cardinals' pitcher Rheal Cormier's ERA rose to 5.51 in his 5 1/3 innings.  The difference again was in relief.  St.Louis got relief: Florida did not.  St.Louis scored individual runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th to overtake the Marlins, the final run coming yet again from Gilkey... a 2-out single to score Gaetti.  Five of the Cardinals' first 6 batters recorded multiple hit games- led by Ozzie Smith and Gregg Jefferies' 3-hit efforts.  2B Brett Barberie led the Marlins with 3 hits.

Final Score: St.Louis 9, Florida 8
WP- M.Perez 4-3, LP- Worrrell 2-7
HR- Colbrunn (2), Carr (3)

G4 For once, there was a semblance of a good pitching performance.  Charlie Hough (5 1/3 6 9 9 4 3) no-hit St.Louis through 5 innings.  As you can tell from his line, the 6th was unlike the first 5.  St.Louis ultimately saw 17 batters come to the plate and 12 of them scored.  The massacre included 10 singles, 1 double, 4 walks, and two Marlin errors.  Smith and Salmon recorded 3 hits in the finale while Florida was led by 4 different players with 2 hits.
Weiss now has hit in 14 straight, but I am waiting results from the 3 home games to see if the last 4 road games in St.Louis will be part of the longer streak or the start of a new one.

Final Score: St.Louis 13, Florida 5
WP- Tewksbury 7-6, LP- Hough 3-12, SV- Urbani (1)
HR- none
