Teams alternate wins in the split. Hard to believe but Boston did not win the games started by Clemens or Darwin. In a rather odd stat, Joe Orsulak started all 4 games and allowed an x play double in all four games. I believe those were his only 4 chances as well. game 1: Toronto got a run in the 2nd when Moliter doubled and scored on a Carter x-play single. Stayed that way until the 8th. Henke came on and must have thought he was pitching for Toronto and not against them. A couple of 2 out hits scored 1 run and the inning ended with a runner thrown out at the plate. That run turned out huge as Orsulak's first x play double brought a run in against Henke Jr. Ward recovered and struck out the next batter with 2 runners in scoring position to save the 2-1 Blue Jay win. game 2: Boston got on the board first with a Zupcic sac fly in the 4th. Toronto used 3 singles and a walk to score twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. A bad decision by Vizcaino in the 5th opened the gates for a big inning. With one out an Pena on second, Lind grounded to short and Vizcaino tried to get Pena at third but was late. Vaughn followed by "settling" for an rbi double (missed the hr chance) but Deer made no mistake and launched a 3 run shot to put Boston up 5-2. Nate Minchey, in his SMILEY debut, allowed an Alomar solo homer to cut it to 5-3. Deer was hit by pitch (retaliation for the hr?), moved to 2nd on a wp and scored on a Zupcic double to get the lead back to 3. Michey allowed a homer to slugger Tim Hulett and 3 straight 2 out singles in the 7th to cut the lead to 6-5 but that was it for the scoring. Eichorn allowed a couple singles in the 8th before a dp ended the inning and Henke had a perfect ninth for the save. game 3: Devon White led off the first with a bp homer and that was the only run until the 7th inning. Boston got a run, aided by Orsulak's x play double but left the bases loaded. Darwin made sure the tie did not last long. Orsulak somehow missed the hr off Darwin's card (settling for a double) and Valentin made sure he scored by allowing a single+error to the next batter. Myers followed with another double off Darwin's card and it was 3-1. Hesketh came on in the 8th and had no luck as he found the hitters loaded columns and no luck from the split cards as well (1-3 double success) as he allowed 3 runs to make it a 6-1 final score. Toronto had 4 hits the first 6 innings and 7 hits the last 2 innings. game 4: Zupcic's double in the 4th got Boston on the board. In the 5th, Orsulak's 4th x play double opened the doors for another big inning. The inning started with a walk and single then the Orsulak double for 2 runs and Greenwell followed with another double. After an out, Valentin singled him in for a 5-0 lead. Greenwell homered in the 7th to make it 6-0. Dopson tired in the 7th allowing 3 straight hits to open the inning. Ryan came on and got a dp grounder before walking the bases loaded. He struck out Alomar to end the inning. Olerud doubled to start the 8th but the next 6 Jays went down in order. Boston stole 3 bases in game 3 (and 4 for the series) and finally has more stolen bases than caught on the season. I think they have been successful on their last 9 attempts to raise the season total to 21-16 |
