> 1993 has been a trying season for the young Marlins, but with August just around the bend, the Fish were able to complete a fun and successful series in sweltering Hot-lanta. G1 It's not been often that Florida has drawn first blood this year. However, facing Steve Avery (5 1/3 10 6 6 1 4), the Marlins got busy with 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th to lead, 4-3, after 5 innings. Avery remained on the hill in the 6th, but couldn't get a 2nd out when Sheffield, Santiago, and Barberie singled to plate 1 run, and Chuck Carr lofted a sac fly
after reliever Doug Jones entered the fray. Jack Armstrong (5 7 3 3 1 6) hadn't been particularly effective, but on this rare occasion, the former Red received just enough relief from the bullpen to notch his 5th win. Even so, the Braves cut a 6-4 9th inning margin in half when Eddie Murray doubled home PH Eric Davis with 2 outs. Todd Worrell made the 1-run lead hold up as he induced Ron Gant to ground to shortstop for the final out. 3B Gary Sheffield led the way for Florida with a HR and a 2-for-4 night. Braves' leadoff hitter Jeff Blauser raised his average to .337 with a 3-for-4 night. Final Score: Florida 6, Atlanta 5 WP- Armstrong 5-11, LP- Avery 13-6, SV- T.Worrell (14) HR- Sheffield (15) G2 was the wildest of the 3 games, for sure. Blauser again provided fireworks for Atlanta as he erased a 1-0 Florida lead with a grand slam homer in the 3rd to put Atlanta up, 4-1. After the Braves tacked on an RBI groundout by Blauser in the 6th and a run-scoring single by Pendleton in the 7th, it looked like Atlanta would run away and hide. However, Florida rallied in the 8th to knock out starter Chuck Finley (7 7 5 4 2 6). Terry Pendleton opened the floodgates by booting Alex Arias' routine grounder. The Marlins followed that with a walk to Jeff Conine and a 3-run home run by spot-starter Greg Colbrunn. That got Florida within, 6-4, but the Fish weren't done. Sheffield and Henry Cotto singled prior to PH Carr flying to Justice for the 1st out. Light-hitting Brett Barberie liked the
stylings of the slow-throwing Jones, and he hit the 2nd 3-run home run of the inning.. Florida's 7-6 lead soon went by the wayside as Charlie O'Brien hit a solo homer in the Braves' half of the 8th. The game was now tied, 7-7. Both bullpens finally settled down and zeroes went up through innings 9-11. With Mike Maddux on the mound in the 12th, Conine singled and PH Darryl Whitmore walked with one out. Orestes Destrade then hit a ball in the hole at short that Blauser knocked down but couldn't get an
out, and the bases were now loaded. Somehow Hal thought it would be a good idea to replace Mike with his brother Greg even though Greg Maddux was the following day's starting pitcher. The next battter, Henry Cotto hit a sac fly to Justice to put the Marlins up, 8-7, This time Worrell allowed but a 1-out single to Ozzie Guillen in the 12th to notch his 15th save. Final Score: Florida 8, Atlanta 7, 12 innings WP- Cummings 2-4, LP- M.Maddux 1-4, SV- T.Worrell (15) HR- Blauser (13), Colburnn (3), Barberie (3), O'Brien (8) G3 The Braves appeared a little teed-off in the finale as they went after rookie
starter Brian Anderson (5 7 5 5 0 1) by scoring in 3 of the first 5 innings. Florida began chipping away against Maddux (8 7 3 0 2 3) by notching 3 unearned runs in the 6th due primarily to Otis Nixon dropping Sheffield's flyball with a man on and no outs. The Braves made it a 3-run margin on David Justice's solo homer in the 7th (his 2nd homer in the game). With a 6-3 lead, Atlanta brought in closer Greg McMichael to start the 9th. McMichael was greeted with consecutive singles by PH Benito
Santiago, Barberie, and Manny Lee. New acquisition Rich Becker flied out for the first out with the runners holding, but Chuck Carr beat out a potential dp groundball to make the score, 6-4, with runners at the corners. With a full count on Jeff Conine, McMichael struck out Florida's left fielder for the final out. Final Score: Atlanta 6, Florida 4 WP- Maddux 13-6, LP- B.Anderson 0-1, SV- McMichael (26) HR- Justice 2 (29) |
