Two evenly-matched teams met at Shea, and the games were decided by chokes, and who got more breaks. So you already know who lost the series.... Game 1: Cincy's Bobby Ayala had his best start (6 IP, 3 hits, 0 runs) then was lifted early in order to preserve it, and even the Worst Bullpen Ever managed to keep the 3-0 lead into the 8th. Seconds after the Reds had missed (of course) not one but two split card chances at home runs, the Mets successfully (of course) came up with not one but two split card home runs off of Kevin Gross and our 3-0 lead was gone. Then in the bottom of the 9th we donated an unearned run to lose it. Reds choke as only we can, and settle for yet another unearned, undeserved loss by the score of 4-3. =================================================== Game 2: Despite a 2B-filled attack featuring lots of hits (13) -- and, naturally, LOB (12) -- the Reds again suffered some fatal gopher bites at the worst possible times, immediately negating our numerous comebacks and taking another one-run loss, 5-4. For the second week in a row, Jeff "Sambito" Brantley entered a game, faced one batter, then left in disgrace after allowing what turned out to be the final-nail-in-the-coffin gopher. HAL surgically dismembered Cincy starter Tim Pugh (5 IP, *14* baserunners), not that New York's Charlie Leibrandt fared much better (7.2 IP, 13 hits) though we helped all we could by utterly avoiding the bad columns on his card. =================================================== Game 3: The Reds scratched out a run in the top of the first, then watched as the Mets came back with three consecutive clutch hits in the bottom of the frame to turn the score from 0-1 to 3-1. Incredibly, John Smiley would work the next 8 innings and allow only 3 more hits. The CIN offense got baserunners and showed some power but, as usual, displayed little ability to translate hits into runs. Finally in the 6th, Eddie Taubensee incredibly didn't miss a slim 1-15 chance at a home run and gave the Reds a 4-3 lead which is how the contest ended. New York managed a total of zero baserunners after the 4th inning after getting 10 in the first four frames but LOBbing almost as many as the Reds did (!). Doc Gooden went the distance for the Mets, allowing 10 hits but walking no one. Alan |
