Even as the 1993 season enters its final stages, the Jays still haven't figured out to consistently play up to our talent level and this was another series where we couldn't get much traction.... Game 1: Toronto batters got the bad result on no less than *13* split card draws, and for a long time it seemed that would matter. But HAL finally decided to balance the scales a little -- by screwing the Blue Jay pitching as much as he was the hitting -- and a close game got out of hand late. Final score: 7-2. To no one's surprise the clutch hits went one way only, and Jack Morris had a rare bad start while batting practice pitcher Greg Swindell was untouchable. With the massively overworked and massively underachieving (an odd combination) Toronto bullpen suffering from fatigue in addition to all of its other problems, Mike Timlin made his season debut and tossed one inning, leaving with a 27.00 ERA. The first 3 batters he faced got hits, but Timlin almost got away unscathed until the O's came through with a 3-run, 2-out (natch) double in the 8th that nailed the coffin shut. =================================================== Game 2: It's rare to find a pitcher whose performance is so putridly out of line with his card and *doesn't* pitch for the Jays (or the Reds), but Baltimore's Mike Mussina fits that description in 1993. As does his opponent on this day, the miserable Jim Abbott who has pitched far more like Costello this season. Neither hurler was in Cy Young form, especially when the Jays plated 3 quick runs and it would have been 6 but we were (and still are) waiting for our first decent split card of the week. Just one batter after Ed Sprague missed an easy BPHR, the Baltimore leadoff guy rolled one -- of course *he* didn't miss. Astoundingly, both pitchers shut things down for the rest of day and the teams combined to allow 0 earned runs in 17 IP after Jack Voigt's ever so fortunate split card. That run came in the Toronto 5th when Kevin McReynolds doubled in Jose Vizcaino with an unearned run. Final score: 4-1. Duane Ward handled the final two innings and didn't stink, while Baltimore's Alan Mills supplied 3 hitless innings after Mussina departed. =================================================== Game 3: For the second day in a row the Jays struck for 3 first inning runs, and for the second day in a row made it hold up for a win. Final score: 5-1. Pat Hentgen pitched up to his card's ability for a change, while the TOA offense had runners on base all over the place against Ben McDonald (9 IP, 11 hits, 4 walks, 1 error, 1 HBP) -- and on base is right where the vast majority of them stayed. Hentgen also registered a complete game, scattering 5 hits (3 of them doubles) and walking just 1. =================================================== Game 4: A fantastic display of dice gymnastics, as the Jays went to every length possible to avoid the hits on Joe Magrane's card and allowed him to post his finest outing of the season (6 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 0 walks). Juan Guzman was attacked immediately and hemorrhaged for nearly 8 innings before expiring with a narrow 4-3 defeat. After a pair of early Toronto rallies were terminated by timely GIDPs the Jays waited patiently and assaulted Bill Krueger for one entire hit in the 7th, but it was an RBI double by Sprague, who later scored on a sac fly to cut the margin to 1 but we got no closer in a contest that should easily have been won.
