As if the worst team in the league needs to get no breaks, the Padres somehow overcome that to split with the Dodgers.
game 1: Padres out hit the Dodgers 7-6 but 3 of those LA hits went over the wall. Two of those three were bp homers (1-4 chance). Piazza hit a pair of 2 run homers and Hatcher added the other run for LA. Meanwhile SD couldn't get much going until the 9th. They finally got on the board and Dave Staton came up as a pinch hitter and rolled his 2 column. He has 2 chances not to get a hr (or at least a shot at one). You guessed it, he got one of the 2 and the game was over. LA wins 5-1.
game 2: In the LA 3rd, they got a bunt single, beat out a bunt for another hit and then a sac bunt before Piazza hit another homer (at least it was an auto and not another bp shot). In the 4th, Curtis led off and missed a 1-17 hr chance. After 2 outs, Caminiti walked and Bell hit a 3 run homer of his own to tie the game. In the 8th, Curtis again led off with the 1-17 hr chance. Surely he had to get it this time. Of course not, settling for his 2nd triple of the game. Lopez followed with an x-play single to drive him in but was thrown out after rounding the base too far. Hoffman pitched the 9th for the save as Lefferts improved to 8-6 (only Padre with a winning record) and lowered his era to 7.24.
game 3: Phil Clark homered to put the Padres up in the 2nd but gave that run back with an error in the 7th. This one was ultimately decided by one team coming through in the same situation. Both teams had a runner on 2nd with 2 outs and got a bp single. Team A's runner had to stop at 3rd base. Team B's runner got the chance to score. The play at the plate was an oh-so-close split of 2. No need to guess which team was which. Dodgers won 2-1.
game 4: In an oddity, Tom Candiotti left after 6 no-hit innings and lost. SD got a run in the first on a walk, sb, error and wild pitch. Padres had numerous chances for hits but no luck. In the 2nd Bell led off with a 1b 1-17 chance and missed. Tingley had a 2b 1-15 chance and missed as well. Bell again had no luck in the 5th, drawing a 19 on a fairly high hit chance. In the 7th, Staton had a 1-13 hr chance but settled for a double. Phil Clark followed with a 20 on his bp homer chance. Staton did come through with a 3 run double in the 8th and Guittierez hit a homer in the 9th to make the final 5-0, just the Padres 2nd shutout of the year.
