Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees
The perennially underachieving Blue Jays visit the #1 overachievers in the A.L., needing to at least win the series if not sweep it in order to have any chance at being on top at the end of the season. Would it happen? Don't be ridiculous; these are the Blue Jays.... Game 1: Joe Carter and John Olerud delivered 6th-inning RBIs that erased a 1-0 deficit and put us on top -- a lead which lasted for 2 whole batters. Then in the NYA seventh, a harmless 1-out walk became the losing run when Chris Donnels stole second (his first SB of the season) and quickly scored on Wade Boggs' hit. Showing us how the spilt cards would be (as if the Jays needed another lesson), HAL also permitted Boggs a successful SB on his first attempt in 110 games, on a blown H&R attempt where his chance of success was about the same as the chance of the sun rising in the west tomorrow. Final score: 2-1. Mediocre Melido Perez went the distance and held the underachieivingest offense in the league to just 4 hits, though he did walk 5 just for variety. ============================================================= Game 2: Cy Young winner Juan Guzman opposed ex-Blue Jay Jimmy Key, whose transformation from chump to quality hurler has been remarkable -- all it required was a change of uniform. Both starters were fortunate that there wasn't more scoring today, as the teams combined for 20 LOB. Key (big surprise) was particularly fortunate: he was down 4-0 in the 4th when Kevin McReynolds had a solid chance at a game-ending 3-run homer; he missed by one split card. Shortly thereafter, our 4-0 lead was slashed to 4-3 when Dave Clark had a solid chance at a 3-run homer; he succeeded by -- of course -- one thin split card. Two split cards right at the limits, one 6-run swing against the Jays. After his early shakiness, Key stifled the Jays entirely and all that was left was to count the innings until the inevitable Toronto choke. New York got the tying run into scoring position with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, so the TOA manager summoned Duane Ward to help the Yankees clinch the pennant. Ward failed, striking out Danny Tartabull on 5 pitches. Final score: 4-3. ============================================================= Game 3: Two lefty starters, both drafted in 1993, opposed each other today. Neither sports a very good ERA, but one of the two has led a charmed life nonetheless and put up a decent record; the other one pitches for the Blue Jays. Three straight Toronto hits in the second plated a pair of runs for Jim Abbott, so naturally he wasted no time in allowing 6 baserunners and 3 runs in the bottom of the frame, all 3 scoring with two outs. Abbott donated another run in the NYA 3rd via a Hubie Brooks double surrounded by a pair of HBP. The Jays turned 4 baserunners in the 5th into 1 run & 3 LOB and that concluded the scoring for the day. We had 2 runners on base in the 9th but another foul split card sealed the defeat. Final score: 4-3. Charmed Danny Jackson needed no relief help from the Yankee bullpen, what with permitting only 3 runs despite having to deal with 16 baserunners. ============================================================= Game 4: Seconds away from being eliminated from the A.L. East pennant race, the Jays finally displayed a glimmer of the massive talent we possess and cruised to an 11-2 win even though we LOBbed as many as we scored. Some early offense helped TOA starter Bobby Witt to relax, though relaxation didn't help him find home plate with any greater accuracy, and he put up numbers similar to Perez in the opener: 9 IP, 5 hits (10 TB) and 5 walks. NYA starter Gil Heredia was touched for 5 runs on 7 hits in less than 3 innings, and a couple of relievers fared only slightly better. Pat Borders finally notched his second home run of the 1993 season and got 3 other hits along the way; Robbie Alomar also had 4 hits, and Ed Sprague drove in 4 runners while raising his '93 average all the way to .199.
