In typical counterproductive fashion, the unluckiest team in the majors has been playing better lately -- about .500 over the past month, which is where we should have been all season, if not better -- and although Cincy struggled with the worst team in the league we eventually prevailed in this series too.... Game 1: Only some of the bloodiest surgery ever witnessed prevented the Reds from a sweep, as our 5-0 lead in the middle innings was obliterated by 12 consecutive Florida runs, many scoring in the most ridiculously unlikely of ways on the most microscopically precise dice rolls & split cards. After the coroner left the scene, the final score of 12-7 was pronounced. CIN starter Kevin Gross wasn't around for the carnage, having left after only 4 runs had been scored (2 unearned) and thus leaving it to the worst bullpen in the history of baseball to get the job done. And it did just that: 4 IP, 9 hits, 2 gophers, 3 walks, 8 runs. An apparent clone of Johnny Bench by the name of Rob Natal led the FLN offense with a 5 for 5 day but the crushing blow came in the 6th with the contest still tied (after the 5 run lead was blown, but nothing more yet) when slugging shortstop Manny Lee connected for a 2-run gopher off of John Roper as HAL switched from using a scalpel on the Cincy pitchers to using a chainsaw instead. =========================================================== Game 2: Luckless Jose Rijo (10-10) pitched the way he should have all year long, tossing 7.2 innings of 5-hit ball, walking 2 and fanning 12 Marlins and allowing 0 runs. But nothing is ever easy for the Reds, even with a mound performance like that, and Rijo clung to a slim 1-0 lead because Florida's Al Leiter and 3 relievers held the Reds to just two hits in the first 8 innings. One of the two was a Bret Boone solo homer in the CIN 3rd on a split card chance even a Cincy batter couldn't miss (though Boone came close). Rijo had to rise to the occasion in the FLN 7th when a leadoff single, SB and groundout put a runner on 3rd with 1 out. He then whiffed Benito Santiago and Slugger Lee to escape the jam. The Reds got 2 insurance runs with 2 outs in the 9th when Goose Gossage grooved a pitch to Reggie Sanders that promptly became his 19th home run of the season. Todd Jones retired the final 4 batters to register his 5th save. =========================================================== Game 3: Luckless Tim Belcher (4-8) pitched the way he should have all year long, tossing 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball, walking 1 and fanning 10 Marlins and allowing 4 runs (3 earned). We don't expect quite as much out of Belcher as Rijo, but starts like this shouldn't be too much to ask. Florida bounced back almost every time the Reds scored, but couldn't keep up in the end. Final score: 11-4. Cincy got home runs from Thomas Howard, John Kruk and Chris Sabo, while Greg Tubbs made his Smiley debut batting leadoff and went 1 for 3 with 3 runs scored & a RBI and a stolen base. He also added a spectacular catch in left field to end the game and keep the winning margin at 7. Alan |
