Subject: Tigers @ Red Sox
Detroit takes the first two at Fenway, but can't complete the sweep. Game 1: Mickey Lolich and Ray Culp were in midseason form in a game that remained scoreless until the seventh. Detroit then broke on top 2-0 by sandwiching a Bill Melton triple between two singles. Billy Conigliaro sent one over the wall in the bottom of the inning to cut the Tiger lead in half, and a Reggie Smith clutch single in the eighth tied the game. Neither team scored again until the 11th, when Jim Northrup smacked a 2-run, 2-out home run off of Bobby Bolin to make the final score 4-2. Joe Grzenda picked up the win in his first appearance as a Tiger, and Tom Timmerman struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in the 11th to notch his first save of 1970. Game 2: Lew Krausse was a little wild in his Detroit debut, but generally kept the Sox off the scoreboard, and Detroit broke the game open late, winning by the score of 9-3. Krausse gave up 7 hits and 5 walks (but only 2 runs) in his 7 innings of work. Boston starter Gary Peters departed during Detroit's 3-run sixth inning, having allowed 5 runs, and rookie reliever Ken Brett was touched for another 4 runs. Detroit only outhit the Sox 10 to 9, but benfitted from 8 walks, 2 errors, and Jim Northrup's second home run of the season. Northrup & Mickey Stanley each drove in 3 runs for the visitors. Game 3: Sonny Siebert cooled down the Tigers with a 3-hit shutout, as Carl Yastrzemski collected 3 hits by himself. Detroit's Tom Murphy (who had one of his team's three measly hits) allowed only 2 runs in 6 innings, but got no offensive support whatsoever from his teammates (except for Don Kessinger, who had the other two hits). Backup catcher Tom Egan had 2 hits and an RBI for Boston. Notes: ====== Don Kessinger (a 2 at shortstop) allowed 3 hits on x-plays, drawing a split card of 1 each time. The Tigers only hit .196 as a team, but outscored the Sox 13 to 8. Boston committed 4 errors to Detroit's zero, but Boston allowed only one hit on an X, while Detroit gave up 6 hits that way. The Sox batters rolled on their own cards only 42% of the time, the lowest percentage in the league so far. Boston's starting pitchers posted an ERA of 2.66, while the bullpen was torched to the tune of an 8.44 ERA. Neither team batted above .200 in "clutch" situations in this low-scoring series. Alan |
