game 1: It took Boston until the 3rd inning to put the ball in play against Jimmy Key, who finished with 11 strikeouts. Both teams managed their first hit on the game with 2 outs in the 3rd inning. In the 4th, Boston finally broke through. With 2 on and 1 out, Rob Deer missed his 1-10 bp homer chance but Mike Greenwell followed with a 1-17 chance and got it for the 3-0 lead. Yankees finally got on the board in the 6th, using 2 2 out hits to score twice. Greenwell homered again in the 7th to make the final 4-2. Henke pitched the last 2 inning to save the game for Dopson.
game 2: The teams almost equaled game 1 in just the first inning. Anthony led off with a homer and Lind singled. Brown stepped up and rolled his 3 column. There are only 3 chances not to get a hit. This time he rolled 3-4 for a double play. Later on he would roll 3-12 twice in a row. (the third number was 3-6 and he would wait until game 3 to get that one). Vaughn then followed with another homer to make it 2-0. Deer and Greenwell walked before Diaz missed a bp single to end the inning. Boggs and Bass opened the Yankee first with singles. Darwin got the next 2 before serving up an auto hr to Oneill to make it a 3-2 Yankee lead. Boston opened the 3rd with 4 straight singles to score twice and take the lead for good. They added single runs in the 4th, 5th, 7th and scored twice in the 9th. Meanwhile Darwin settled down, allowing just another solo homer and Boston won 9-4. Boston ended up with 15 hits and left 15 on base. It was Mo Vaughn's turn to homer twice in this one.
game 3: The elusive 3rd out cost Saberhagen in this one. Kirby doubled to start the game, went to 3rd on a Lind bunt and scored on a Greenwell grounder to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. They added to it in the 6th using 3 singles and a walk to score a run. Brown got his 3-6 for a bases loaded inning ending double play. Saberhagen got the first 2 outs and had given up just 2 hits until this point. What followed was single, hr, single, single to tie the game. In the 8th, Boston loaded the bases with no outs. K, K, ground out ended that threat. In the bottom of the inning, again Saberhagen had 2 outs with one on when Yankees got single, hr to win 5-2. Saberhagen has now allowed 14 hr's with just 9 walks on the season (and Boggs should have led off the game with a hr but was a W so only got a single).
Next Year Saberhagen allows 18 hr and 18 walks so he could pull the more homers than walk trick 2 years in a row.
