This series had everything you would expect from 2 of the worst teams in the league. Each game featured a lead of at least 3 runs by the winning team. Each game had a rally by the losing team to tie (1 game they came within one run) before the winning team went back in front. There was bad defense aplenty in this series as well. 9 errors as well as several x play hits.
game 1: In the 2nd the Reds got a bp hr, walk, 2b+error and sac fly to score 3 times. They added what seemed like 2 unnecessary runs in the 7th on a single through the drawn in infield. The Padres finally came alive in the 8th. After the first batter made an out, the Padres got 1b,1b, bb,bb to force in their first run. Melvin Nieves was then sent to pinch hit for Benes. He will long remember his first SMILEY hit as he rolled a 2-10 for an automatic grand slam and the game was tied. In the 10th, the Reds first batter reached on an error, moved to second on a bunt and to third on 2 walks. The next batter then singled on a split of 1 on an xplay to give the Reds the 6-5 win.
game 2: In the Padres 3rd, pitcher Doug Brocail led off with a double and scored on a one out single by Discarsina. Gwynn then launched his 11th homer of the year to make it a 3-0 lead. Staton followed with one of 2 non-homer rolls in his 2 column to end the inning. In the 4th, the Padres used 5 hits to score 4 times. Brocail had an rbi fielders choice when the Reds couldn't get the out at home. Brocail then stole 2nd base (33% jump 1-19 safe) before scoring for the 2nd time. The Reds finally got on board in the 6th. After 2 walks, Kruk tripled and then scored to make it 7-3. The Reds hit a pair of bp homers in the 7th to make it 7-6. Staton finally rolled one of his auto hr in his 2 column in the 9th to make the final 9-6. Hoffman got save #19.
game 3: Padres used 4 singles and 2 walks to score 3 times in the 3rd. Kruk's 2 run homer in the 4th capped a 3 run inning to tie the game. Caminiti got a bp homer in the 5th to put the Padres up 1. In the 9th, Roberts reached on a 2 base error and scored on a Sanders throwing error on the next batter. That turned out to be a big run as the Reds got a 1b, 2b(x play) and a groundout to score once in the bottom of the inning. Despite allowing the run, Hoffman picked up save #20.
