Alan:

What were you doing having a non tying/winning run try to score on a split in the 9th? Being the Reds and all?

The Cincinnati management would like to assure the San Francisco Giants that we were absolutely not *intentionally* choking away game after game after game after game (that's all 4 of them) in this series -- the unluckiest team in the history of the major leagues was just doing what comes naturally, in our totally inimitable fashion.

(The Reds visit Candlestick for 4 games in the final week of the season, so don't despair, Giants fans....)

Game 1: Cincy's first batter of the game missed a home run by the width of one thin split card; that showed us how things would go for the next 4 games.  With 2 outs in the first inning, HAL found a surgical split in favor of the Braves (the first of roughly a million) and one quick gopher later we were losing 4-0 before most of the Atlanta fans had even found their seats.

But the Cincy batters failed to treat ATN starter Chuck Finley with the proper respect (4.1 IP, 10 hits) and we actually took a 6-5 lead in the fifth.  That held up for one entire inning, when a critical error not only plated a run but kept the inning alive so that with 2 outs, reliever Milt Hill could come in and achieve the "Perfect Sambito" -- a 3-run, game-losing gopher on the most surgical split card possible.  A couple of late insurance runs turned a game we deserved to win into an 11-6 rout.

===================================================

Game 2: Cincy's first batter of this game also had a split card chance at a home run -- and got it!!!  We spent the rest of the game (and series) waiting for the next good break.  Final score: 3-1.

Although he soon forfeited that enormous 1-run lead (via defensive sabotage), Cincy's John Smiley held Greg Maddux to a draw through 6 innings.  But solo runs in the ATN 7th and 8th spelled disaster, as the visitors managed only 3 hits off of Maddux after Greg Tubbs' astonishing break to open the game.

Right fielder Felix "not a 4, not a high e-rating" Jose choked up SIX BASES worth of blown-x howlers today, crippling the Cincy effort with a 4-base gift in the ATN 3rd with the opposing pitcher at the plate.

===================================================

Game 3: Tom Browning returned from the dead with a fantastic outing, matching zeroes with a far better -- and far more fortunate -- opponent.  Browning went 7.2 innings and permitted nary an earned run.  However a blown-x with -- what else? -- 2 outs plated an unearned run in the ATN 2nd.

It looked like that would be enough to hand the Reds yet another unearned, undeserved loss (and it was) because the contest remained 1-0 until the 9th inning.  The Reds then loaded the bases with nobody out.... and therefore promptly hit into the kind of DP that erases 2 runners while making sure that nobody scores.

But Bret Boone came through with a 2-out single that did result in an RBI, though a second runner was gunned at the plate.  Surely that wouldn't be important, just like the earlier unearned run wouldn't be.  Right.

All that comeback did was set up the inevitable choke in the bottom of the 9th.  And inevitable it certainly was. Final score: 2-1.

===================================================

Game 4: Things started off far different than usual today.  With alleged ace Jose Rijo on the mound, the Cincy offense exploded and vanquished John Smoltz in the 3rd inning on our way to building a 9-1 lead in the 5th.  Game over, right?

It would be for any other team, but these *are* the Reds, you know.

Luckless Jose came completely unglued in the 5th, allowing a 2-run triple and a 2-run surgical split card gopher which cut the lead to 9-6.  Two innings later another surgically precise split card came up against the Reds, this time when the Braves had the bases loaded.  Grand Slam, 10-9.  NOW the game is over.

Atlanta tacked on one more run, then the Reds rallied in the 9th but -- quite fittingly -- the rally was extinguished when another adverse split card caused yet another one of our runners to be nailed at the plate.  Final score: 11-9, one more in the endless line of examples to document the fact that NOBODY chokes like the Reds.

Alan
