What’s worse than a four-game sweep? Four straight one-run losses. What’s even worse? When the opponent wins three of them in their last at-bat. Game 1: BOA 7, BAA 6 As a general rule of thumb, when your bullpen issues three hits and five walks to the first ten batters they face, your winning percentage will suffer. An RBI single by Mo Vaughn and a Rob Deer sac fly gave Boston a 2-0 first inning lead. But in the 2nd, Baltimore’s Craig Wilson, getting a start in the OF due to usage issues, tied it with a two-run homer off Danny Darwin, and two outs later David Segui singled to put the O’s on top 3-2. An error by Jarvis Brown helped the O’s score two more in the 4th. Deer took Joe Magrane deep in the 6th to cut Baltimore’s lead to two runs, but Chris Hoiles countered with his own solo shot in the 7th to make it 6-3. But Boston tied it up in the bottom of the 7th, as three straight walks by the Orioles bullpen set up a clutch two-run single by Mo Vaughn. When pinch-runner Damon Buford was picked off in the top of the 8th, you could read the writing on the wall. The usually reliable Todd Frohwirth walked in the decisive run in the bottom of the inning. Game 2: BOA 2, BAA 1 In the third, after Cal Ripken doubled, the decision to bunt him over to third paid off as Boston’s Brett Saberhagen threw a wild pitch to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead; Boston was poised to answer with runners on the corners, but Curt Schilling picked Tom Lampkin off first. The Red Sox tied it 1-1 in the 6th on doubles by Wayne Kirby and Vaughn. Saberhagen left after 7 after allowing just two hits; Schilling gave up nine hits in 7 2/3 innings, but they both left with no-decisions. In the 9th, the Orioles loaded the bases but failed to score, and John Valentin ended the suspense by leading off the bottom of the inning with a walkoff HR. Game 3: BOA 4, BAA 3 Deer started the scoring with a solo HR in the 2nd off Greg Swindell, but in the top of the 3rd, he dropped Damon Buford’s game-tying sac fly. The Orioles failed to capitalize on Deer’s error, so it remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 4th, when Deer scored on a Scott Cooper single. A passed ball by Hoiles set up a sac fly by Vaughn to give Boston a 3-1 lead in the 5th. In the 7th, Mike Pagliarulo hit a rare triple and scored on a groundout to cut Boston’s lead to one run. In the top of the 8th, Harold Baines singled in the tying run, but with runners on the corners and no outs, Boston’s Tom Henke got two vital strikeouts to keep the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the 9th, after Eric Anthony drew a walk, pinch-runner Jeff McNeely stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out single by Mo Vaughn. Game 4: BOA 2, BAA 1 Orioles starter Mike Mussina served up a gopherball to Kirby to start the bottom of the first, giving the Bosox a 1-0 lead. That’s where things stood until the bottom of the 5th, when McNeely doubled in Valentin for what proved to be the winning run. The Orioles finally scored when Pagliarulo homered with two out and none on in the 9th, but Henke came in to face one batter and save the win for Aaron Sele. Mussina deserved better, allowing just four hits and a walk in eight innings. |
