Padres deal the Giants pennant hopes a potentially fatal blow by splitting the series.
game 1: Padres got 1 in the first on a Caminiti single but the Giants tied it in the second. Craig Colbert, who has 2 walks on his card, managed a 2 out x play double to put a runner on third and that was followed by a wild pitch to score the run. Gwynn and Caminiti had back to back rbi doubles in the 3rd to put SD back on top but the Giants came right back with 2 in the bottom of the inning. After 2 quick outs, the Giants got single,single, walk to load the bases before Daulton got a 2 run single. Brad Ausmus smacked his 6th homer in the 6th to put the Padres ahead yet again. Storm Davis left after a walk and single to start the bottom of the 8th. Clark came on an the first batter reached on a 2 base error to tie the game. After 2 outs Milt Thompson came through with a 2 run single to put the Giants up 6-4. In the 9th, the Padres were down to their last out and no one on and they managed to load the bases before Caminiti struck out to end the game.
game 2: Had the Padres been at home, they could have done some major damage. They got bp split of 3,4, and 8 and had nothing to show for it as it was only 1-2 success. Pitcher Andy Benes had 2 of those splits. Padres got an unearned run in the first and added 3 in the 2nd inning for an early lead. Gutierrez doubled in one run before consecutive wild pitch and passed ball allowed the other 2 runs to score. Giants got back to back doubles in the 2nd to score and again in the 4th to score twice (the 2nd double also added a 2 base error). That would be the last scoring as the Padres held on for the 4-3 win.
game 3: Once again the Padres score first, as Gutierrez stretched a triple into an inside the park homer in the 3rd inning. Brocail allowed a lead off single in the first but then retired the next 9 Giants. The next 4 reached to lead off the 4th, single, walk, hbp, double before a sac fly made it a 3-1 game. Bip Roberts had an rbi double in the 6th to pull the Padres to within one. Apparently 30 one run losses is enough on the season as the padres allowed 3 unearned runs in the 8th (much like game 1). The inning went error, out, out double, another error and a walk to load the bases. Up stepped Craig Colbert (see game 1) and he got one of those 2 walks on his card to force in a run. Apparently shamed by this, Mauser then tossed a wild pitch for the 3rd run and the Giants won 6-2. The Giants scored 6 times with just 4 hits (and only 3 walks).
game 4: Remember the low bp split? Until game 4, no one was successful although there were plenty of low card splits. Craig Lefferts was on the mound for SD so you knew it was only a matter of time until the Giants got 1. Mike Benjamin was the lucky contestant and the Giants took a 2-0 lead in the 5th inning. In the 6th, after one out, the Padres got 3 singles and a double to score twice and tie the game. After an out, Curtis was walked intentionally to load the bases. Staton drew another walk to force in the go ahead run and then Clark had a 2 run single to cap the 5 run inning. Williams had a 2 out rbi triple in the 6th to make the final score 5-3. Hoffman tossed a scoreless 9th to get save #25 on the season.
In his only start of the series, Gwynn went 1-2 in game 1 and drew 3 walks (only 1 intentional).
