Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, the road to elimination, game 1
The clock prepares to strike midnight on the Blue Jays season, as for the fourth time in the past decade the Jays will fail to finish in first place despite possessing the most talent in the division. How long can we postpone the bitter end....? Bobby Witt took on Melido Perez in the series opener. Unfortunately, Witt's penchant for getting bountiful offensive support from his teammates was not present today, at least not while he was on the mound; not once but twice TOA runners were gunned down at home plate during Witt's tenure, or he would have had another 'W'. But, breaking with season-long tradition, Witt didn't pitch so badly that he *needed* all that much support. Other traditions held up, however: a fortuitous split card (of course) gopher with (of course) two out in the inning gave the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. But the Jays came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the second, though a third run was nailed to end the inning. Then we loaded the bases in the 3rd with just 1 out, and Perez wild-pitched a run home before we inevitably LOBbed the rest. The score remained 3-1 until the NYA 7th, when Kevin 'not a 4' McReynolds committed his second botch of the day in left field, a 3-base blown-x howler which handed the Yankees two gift runs. The game-tying run scored after allegedly Unhittable Paul Kilgus replaced Witt and promptly allowed 3 of the first 4 batters he faced to reach base. The 4th came via another timely Toronto error which loaded the bases with 2 outs in the inning -- but they stayed that way as Kilgus recovered to induce Dave Clark to ground out. Responding to that rare display of semi-clutch performance -- blowing a 2-run lead but only choking up a tie instead of a deficit! -- the Blue Jay offense rallied and hit for the cycle in the 8th off of Perez and reliever Wally Whitehurst. The home run came first so as to minimize damage, but the double, triple and second single of the frame all sent runners homeward too and the visitors suddenly had an 5-run lead. Duane Ward was summoned in order to try to blow that lead, and he failed about as completely as possible: Ward retired all 6 batters he faced, recording 5 strikeouts and a groundout, and the 5 K's came on a total of 17 pitches. With the 1993 horse out of the barn and several miles down the road, Ward finally gave Toronto a glimpse of something that should have been a lot more common these past few seasons. Final score: 8-3. Witt, Kilgus and Ward combined to fan 12 Yankee batters, and on this most rare of days it was a Toronto opponent whose names were all over the 'RLISP 2-out' list instead of the all-too-familiar ones who normally populate it.
