Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, the road to elimination, game 2

A couple of pitchers who epitomize their teams opposed each other today: expensive Toronto draft pick Jim Abbott has underachieved massively and struggled to get his ERA under 5.0.  Former Toronto punching bag Jimmy Key has become quite the pitcher since his exorcism and the burning of his Blue Jays jersey, and he will probably seal up a 20-win season for his overachieving squad as it cruises into the 1993 ALCS.

But the pitchers' roles were reversed today, almost -- but not quite -- until the end.  Abbott fell behind through only a little fault of his own, as yet another timely error by a TOA fielder donated yet another critical unearned run in the NYA 2nd.

Moments later, funny things started happening.  Abbott suddenly started putting zeroes on the scoreboard, and the hits began ricocheting off the Blue Jay bats; heroes with unfamiliar names like "Pulliam" and "Schofield" while even season-long slumpers like McReynolds and Sprague contributed (!).

After getting that gift-wrapped 1-0 lead, Key didn't even make it through the next half inning.  Devon White's double plated a pair before anyone was out, a Joe Carter double (our THIRD missed split-card home run of the game) chased home White and two batters later Harvey Pulliam *didn't* miss a split-card home run.  That made the score 5-1 and ended Key's day.

Toronto eventually tacked on 3 runs off of reliever Bobby Munoz and 3 more off of Bob Wickman.  McReynolds, Sprague and Schofield (with a triple!) cost Munoz his 3 runs, and the bottom of the order was mostly responsible for the damage to Wickman too.  The score was 11-1 midway through the 8th.

Those who are familiar with the Blue Jays will not be surprised by what happened next.

Bud Abbott had only permitted 5 hits through the first 7 innings, then reverted to his more typical, bumbling, Lou Costello-like form.  He barely escaped the 8th after being battered for 3 hits, but just one run that reduced our lead to a slender 9 runs.

The Jays went out 1-2-3 in the 9th, overconfidently certain that no further runs could possibly be necessary.

Aboott began the dreaded bottom of the 9th by gophering up a run to the first batter he faced.  He then recorded an out, his final one of the day, before parting after a walk, a single and an RBI double.

Woody Williams and his (formerly) good ERA took Abbott's place.  Bernie Williams worked him for a sac fly to make it an 11-5 contest and the Yankees were down to their final out.

A double made it 11-6 and New York's second fortuitous split-card gopher of the inning immediately followed.  11-8.

Now let's see if Duane Ward can dominate for two days in a row.  The answer would be 'no'.  A single, followed by another single, followed by a 4-pitch free pass to load 'em up with the losing run coming to the plate, kept the Jays looking for that ever-elusive final out.

Lance Blankenship was the scheduled batter but he was called back in favor of Mike Humphreys, an overachieving zoid who was acquired a few weeks back for precisely this type of situation.  With a nearly 20% gopher chance (and over 30% extra base hits) on his card and a choker like Ward on the mound, Yankee fans were eagerly anticipating the upcoming Grand Slam and Toronto fans (if any) were wondering if a 10-run choke would set a league record.

But Ward reared back, somehow convinced HAL to roll on his card, and found a 3-pitch strikeout to "save" the day.  Not literally though -- despite entering the contest in a save situation, the official scorer declined to credit Ward with a save because of Ward's generosity in loading the bases for the Yankees.

Final score: 11-1 becomes 11-8 and the Jays live on, in order to die another day.

Alan
